Who was he? Born in Nelson, New Zealand Entered Nelson Collegiate School at the age of 16 1893 – Graduated in Mathematics and Physical Science 1894 – Awarded a Scholarship to work under J.J. Thomson Went to McGill University to study radioactivity August 30, 1871 – October 19, 1937
Gold Foil Experiment 1909 Along with Hans Geiger he used alpha particles to test the makeup of the atom Aimed alpha particles from a radioactive source at sheets of gold foil Observed where the alpha particles struck thescreen Proved the plum pudding model inaccurate
Rutherford’s Model The mass of an atom was found in the nucleus Surrounding the nucleus were electrons that made up the atom’s volume Looks like tiny planetary system It only explained the charge of the atom, not the mass. A neutral particle must also exist in the mass but not to the charge of the atom
Major Scientific Contribution His discovery of the nucleus His discovery of the emissions of alpha, beta and gamma particles
