Background of Ernest Rutherford • Born- August 30th Brightwater, New Zealand • Died-October 19th 1937 (aged 66)Cambridge, England • He studied physics and advanced chemistry at University of Manchester • Awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1908.
Theory of a Nuclear Atom • Rutherford’s greatest contribution to physics • Investigated into the scattering of alpha rays and the nature of the inner structure of an atom which led to his concept of the “nucleus” • According to Rutherford the whole mass of an atom and the positive charge of an atom is concentrated at the very center
Gold Foil Experiment • Bombarded a thin piece of gold foil with positively charged particles (alpha particles) • Most particles went straight through the foil • This shows that an atom is mostly empty space • Some particles bounced off of the foil • This means that the nucleus is positively charged
Conclusion Ernest Rutherford made very important discoveries that contributed a lot to the study of atoms. He worked with many physics and scientists such as H. Geiger, Frederick Soddy, and his professor Thomson from the University of Manchester.
