  1. PM104Expository Preaching II “Instruction in Narrative Preaching” Class Lectures

  2. Introduction • We have been called by God to preach. • We should let this selection dictate our direction, determination, expectations and satisfaction. • He has given us His Word from which we are to preach. • God has sovereignly determined the audience to whom we are directed to preach.

  3. 2 Timothy 4.1-5 niv84 1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

  4. Preach the Word2 Tim 4.2 describes what all pastors are charged to do: preach this is a serious charge based on v1: name of God AND the coming judgment, Christ’s return and establishing the Kingdom reflects the value of the Scriptures being inspired and profitable

  5. be prepared in season and out of season the Word is effective no matter how ineffective we might feel or know ourselves to be therefore we should be ready to deliver it no matter how difficult the opportunity

  6. correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 2 Tim 4.2 If we discover people in error, then we should correct them If we find people in sin, then we should rebuke them If we encounter people who overwhelmed with circumstances, then we should encourage them. Whenever we apply the Word we must do so with patience and sound teaching

  7. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. 4.3 There is good reason to take the charge of preaching seriously This answers the question “Why?” should preaching be powerfully charged as a pastor’s duty “sound” means healthy

  8. what their itching ears want to hear. They do not want to face the truth They wanted what was easy on their ears Appetite for hearing was selfish.

  9. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths(4.4) Audience inclinations was to be attracted to what was appealing There is no reference here to the evil intent of the false teachers When the truth is missing, it is not neutral; it is damaging

  10. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry (4.5) leadership does not have the luxury of emotional outburst leaders will face difficult moments evangelism is important work to do do all the work not just what you like

  11. Homiletical priorities in the process: • Start with the Word & Pray • Read for familiarity • Take note of God’s natural developmental flow • Identify natural idea segments • Gather a sense of God’s overall idea for the passage • Carefully think through how the larger idea is comprised of smaller ideas • God has a cogent idea in each section of His Word; look for it.

  12. Homiletical priorities in the process (cont’): • Utilize exegetical details to support the understanding of the Idea. • Choose section to be preached • Pray • Identify the following ideas: • Historical idea: brainstorm at least 20 • Exegetical idea: thoughtfully consider 10 • Theological idea: selectively construct 5 • Homiletical idea: decide on 1
