3. Introduction • We have been called by God to preach. • We should let this selection dictate our direction, determination, expectations and satisfaction. • He has given us His Word from which we are to preach. • God has sovereignly determined the audience to whom we are directed to preach.

4. 2 Timothy 4.1-5 niv84 1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

5. Preach the Word2 Tim 4.2 describes what all pastors are charged to do: preach this is a serious charge based on v1: name of God AND the coming judgment, Christ’s return and establishing the Kingdom reflects the value of the Scriptures being inspired and profitable

Homiletical priorities in the process: • Start with the Word & Pray • Read for familiarity • Take note of God’s natural developmental flow • Identify natural idea segments • Gather a sense of God’s overall idea for the passage • Carefully think through how the larger idea is comprised of smaller ideas • God has a cogent idea in each section of His Word; look for it.
