  1. Spring Gardening Cleanup Checklist

  2. It’s been a long winter, but the sun is finally starting to peep through the clouds as spring comes into full bloom. Flowers are sprouting, bees are buzzing and you’re going to want to be out soaking up the sunshine in your backyard. So why not start the spring cleaning in the garden to help it grow beautifully this season? If you want your garden looking its greenest for spring, here are a few steps you can take.

Out with the old • Remove any dead or dry debris leftover from the cold winter. • Remove weeds and any dead or winter-damaged leaves and branches from your plants, soil, trees and shrubs. • Tidy and prune overgrown perennials to make room for new growth. • Rake up any leaf cover left over from winter to warm the soil and allow nutrients and water to flow in.

  4. Give the garden a good feed Now that spring is here, it’s time to nourish and nurture your surviving plants with some nutrient-rich food. The food plants like best? Fertiliser! • Work a thin layer of fertilizer around all your flowering plants. • Fertilising your garden will give it a steady food supply: as the fertiliser breaks down, it can be absorbed by plant roots to aid their growth and flowering.

  5. Re-pot and re-plant Spring is the perfect time to repot and transplant any trees, shrubs or flowering plants which have outgrown their pots or bed. • Remove plants carefully and try to keep the roots moist while you’re moving the plant. • Once you’ve moved the plant to its new home, don’t forget to top up with fresh potting mix or mulch. • Buying new pots for re-potting can help add a fresh dash of colour to your garden.

New Plants With the sun and the rain of spring helping to keep plants healthy, it’s a great time to create new garden beds and plant anything you please! • Start your own veggie or herb garden. • Add some colour to your backyard with flowering spring annuals. • The sky’s the limit, so plant as much as you want – but make sure you allocate enough space for each one to grow (both across and up!).
