Assistive Technology Legal Terminology: DEVICE: An Assistive Technology device is any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities. (IDEA) SERVICE: Any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device (IDEA) Our terminology: A.T. is defined as technological tools (computers and communication devices) used to access education, employment, recreation or communication, living as independently as possible. There are also many tools that are low cost, lo-tech solutions that can be considered A.T. tools as well.
Levels of Assistive Technology • No Tech: An item that does not include electricity, a battery, or a computer chip • Low Tech: An item that may include a battery or require electricity • Hi Tech: An item that includes a computer chip
Categories of Assistive Technology Assistive technology use can be applied across all environments in any of the 4 following areas: • Stability and Mobility: provides options and alternatives to ensure physical well-being and opportunities for mobility • Activities of Daily Living: promote independence and active participation in home, school, and community; include work and recreation • Learning: assist with accessing curriculum, demonstrating understanding, and using computers in the school setting • Communication: develop and support critical language and social skills
