Overview of MAP Tests • Not a test for determining mastery of skills. • Primarily designed to inform instruction. • Provides a roadmap for students toward achieving mastery. This test provides the instructional levelof the student.
Students Receive RIT Scores • Rasch unIT (RIT) • Achievement scale • Independent of age or grade • Reflects the instructional level at which student is currently performing • Used to show growth over time
Grade Level Normative Data Connects your class’s scores to those of a larger group Shows typical performance New 2011 Norms Beginning-of-Year, Middle-of- Year, and End-of-Year 4
Access & Interpret the Teacher Report • Access Student Reports (refer to Quick Access Guide) • View by RIT Ranges or Goal Descriptors • Look at Reading • Student Data • Test Type (S/G Survey with Goals) • RIT Score • Standard Error (estimate of precision of RIT score) • RIT Range (confidence band; + or – standard error) • Percentile/Percentile Range (where student performed relative to norm group) • Lexile (Measures difficulty of text) • Goal Performance Areas
Standard Error • An estimate of the precision of the RIT score • The smaller the standard error, the more precise • Indicates whether students are applying themselves, randomly answering, and/or taking the test too fast • A score of 5.0+ means the data is unreliable • Activity • Identify students in your class whose standard error scores are 5.0+
RIT Range • Confidence Band • If student took test again, 68% chance score would fall in this range • RIT score + or – standard error of measurement
Percentile/Percentile Range • Indicates where student performed relative to the norm group • Student at 85th percentile ranks 85th out of 100 students in norming group • Percentile Range is a confidence band • If student retook test, 68% chance would score in this percentile range
Overall Class Data • Located at bottom of Teacher Report • Mean RIT: Average RIT score for your class in this subject • Median RIT: Middle score of this class for this content area • Standard Deviation
Standard Deviation • Shows diversity of levels of learning • SD of 1-10: Homogeneous group (whole group instruction) • SD of 11-15: Use professional judgment (enrich higher ability, remediate lower ability) • SD of 16+: Heterogeneous group (use flexible grouping) • SD of 21+: Very diverse group: (whole group instruction will be unsuccessful)
Comparing Median RIT to Goal Strands • Compare Median RIT to each Goal Performance Strand Median • Any Goal Performance Strand Median that is higher than the overall Median RIT indicates a strength for your class • Any Goal Performance Strand Median that is lower than the Median RIT indicates a weakness for your class
Accessing Other Reports Online • Refer to Quick Access to MAP Online Reports handout • Class by RIT • Class Breakdown by Goal • Descartes
Applying the Class Breakdown by Goal Report What are the instructional applications? • Flexible grouping • Designing instructional plans • Differentiating instruction • Identify relative strengths and weaknesses • Goal setting
Interpreting the Class Breakdown by Goal Report Kayana (225)
DesCartes: A Continuum of Learning • Aligned to goal structure of state standards • 10 point RIT divisions: • Skills • Concepts • New vocabulary, signs, and symbols • Left column skills to enhance (75% accuracy) • Center column is instructional level (50%) • Right column skills to introduce (25% accuracy)
Student Projected Performance Report • Shows how a class is projected to perform in each proficiency category on the WKCE-CRT • Categorizes student in each content area as Advanced, Proficient, Basic, and Minimal
