Research Experience for Undergraduates in Nanomaterials Ian Baker, Dartmouth College, DMR 0754256 The demand for materials with novel properties is escalating rapidly. In order for undergraduate materials science education to keep pace with this demand and the rapid changes in the field, it must cross the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines. Research Experience for Undergraduates in Nanomaterials Ian Baker, Dartmouth College, DMR 0754256 The Nanomaterials REU program at Dartmouth College hosted ten students from ten institutions in nine states during Summer 2008 in nine diverse projects that built on REU research from previous years. These undergraduates worked in four departments: Chemistry, Engineering, Physics and Medicine. Weekly meetings focused on student presentations featuring research progress and gave the students an opportunity to network with Dartmouth faculty and other researchers. • Featured projects during 2008 included: • Bulk –MnAl Nanocrystals (Baker) • Imprinted Films (BelBruno) • Production and Characterization of Iron/Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (Cullen/Zhang) • Self-Assembled Organometallic Block Copolymers as Templates for Ordered Arrays of Magnetic Bimetallic Nanoparticles (Glueck) • Nanomaterials from block copolymers (Grubbs) • Nanoparticle Hyperthermia Treatment of Cancer (Hoopes) • Electron Counting for Quantum Measurement in Semiconductor Nanostructure (Rimberg) • Equipment Design for Magnetic Nanoparticle Cancer Treatment (Sullivan) • Magnetic Nanoparticle Imaging: Of the Localization of Nanoparticles Using Combinations Magnetic Fields (Weaver) • FUNDED BY THE DOD ASSURE PROGRAM • AND THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION
