Early Stages • Korea was occupied by Japan since 1910 and carried over into WW2. • Many Korean men were placed in labor battalions to defend the Japanese islands. • Korean women took the role of “comfort women.”
Middle War • Korea entered the war as an Axis power because of Japan’s influence. • Korean armed forces where killed or left to starve after US forces moved up the Japanese islands. • During the war Korea was industrialized with farms and factories to support the growing Japanese army.
Post WW2 • After dropping of the atomic bombs and the overrunning of Japan by soviet forces, Japan surrendered to Allied powers on August 15, 1945. • Soviet forces occupied Northern Korea while US forces occupied Southern Korea, this lead to a division in the 38th parallel and formed Communist Korea and Capitalist Korea.
