*PRAYER OF CONFESSION(unison) Lord, you know us too well. You know how easy it is for us to come to you and to proclaim loudly of our faith when all is going well.
But when the waters get rough, and the waves threaten to swamp our little boats, we cry and wail in fear.
We are sure that these waves will be the very things that destroy us. Over the wind and the waves, you call to us to place our trust in you.
That’s not so easy for us. We are so used to getting lots of reassurances and written guarantees of safety. But still you call to us.
Help us take our focus off the wind and the waves and place our gaze directly on you. Attune our hearts and our lives to hear your call, and to respond in faith.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON L: Don’t be afraid. Jesus is with you at all times. You are healed, forgiven, and loved. Come and live in the love of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God. Amen.

PROCLAIMING THE WORD SCRIPTURE READING: Isaiah 43:1-13
But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters,I will be withyou;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, yourSavior.
I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchangefor your life.
Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, ‘Give them up’, and to the south, ‘Do not withhold; bring my sons fromfar away and mydaughters from
the end of the earth – everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.’ Bring forth the people who are blind, yet have eyes, who are deaf, yet have ears!
Let all the nations gather together, and let the peoples assemble. Who among them declared this, and foretold to us the former things? Let them bring their witnesses to justify them, and let themhear and say,‘It is true.’
You are my witnesses, says the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be anyother after me.
I, I am the Lord, and besides me there is no savior. I declared and saved and proclaimed, when there was no strange god among you; and you are my witnesses, says the Lord. I am God, and also henceforthI am He;
there is no one who can deliver from my hand; I work and who can hinder it?
SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew 14:22-33
Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain byhimself to pray.
When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking towards them onthe lake.
But when the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified, saying, ‘It is a ghost!’ And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, ‘Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.’
Peter answered him, ‘Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.’ He said, ‘Come.’ So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came towards Jesus. But when he noticedthe strong wind,he became
frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt?’ When they got into the boat, thewind ceased.
And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.’ L: This is the Word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God!
