History of Lincoln County Youth Entrepreneurship • Spring 2005: First Entrepreneurship class at Waldport High School • Curriculum • National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) • Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning (REAL) • Open to all grade levels. Preference given to: • junior and senior students • students from low income households • Results: • Entrepreneurship instruction • Students wrote a business plan or worked on the school based enterprise, the Kayak Shack
History of Lincoln County Youth Entrepreneurship • Summer 2005: Waldport Outdoor Adventures/WHS Kayak Shack Opens • Offers • Kayak rentals • Guided tours • Open June through August, times based upon tides • Liability insurance through school district • Start up costs covered by grants • Administered by volunteers, AmeriCorps*VISTA, Rural Community School • Results: • $12,000 profit • 6 student summer jobs • Positive customer evaluations • Community support
History of Lincoln County Youth Entrepreneurship • Fall 2005: Second entrepreneurship class at WHS • New instructor. Position funded by WHS • Full year class • Class still in progress • Lessons Learned: • Class works best if allow for one full year to instruct and write plans • Students need to write plan while receiving instruction to make connections between material and their business • Full time instructor is important • When creating a school based enterprise • Create partnerships • Identify supervisor for the project

Future Plans • Strengthen existing program • Create second SBE • Possible expansion of program: • Younger students • Other areas in Lincoln County Connection to Entrepreneurship Development System • Our program is very new, so we are working on this aspect. • Prospect for loans to students through revolving fund set up by local banks • Culture: • participants beginning to promote entrepreneurship to other students • Waldport community support for young entrepreneurs
