  3. EXAMINATION SKILLS • READING AND SUMMARISING TEXTS • LOCATING AND RETRIEVING INFORMATION • INFERRING MEANING • UNDERSTANDING WRITERS’ STRUCTURAL DEVICES • UNDERSTANDING LANGUAGE USES/FEATURES • EXPLORE AND DEVELOP INFORMATION

  4. STARTER Read the short story and as fast as you can find the following information: 5 words beginning with the letter “s” 2 characters that appear in the story 2 settings 1 emotion Use evidence!

  5. STARTER ANSWERS • Stretched, sprung, smiled, scornfully, shoes... • The boy, the deer • Bedroom, the farm, the bush • Excitement, misery, frustration

  6. UNDERSTANDING CONTENT Re-read the short story and list all the events/actions that take place. • The boy wakes, dresses and leaves the house • He hears the early morning birdsong • He feels excited and euphoric and jumps for joy • He hears a strange scream • He sees an injured deer being devoured by ants • He feels pity and misery at how this had to happen • He tries to work out what happened • He goes home still contemplating the event

  7. INFERRING MEANING In the story the young boy seems to go through a rite of passage, an experience of learning through witnessing difficult events which makes him more mature. He goes through a whole range of emotions. Track the boy’s emotions by highlighting them, then plot them on a graph to show how his mood changes. Add a quotation to each feeling.
