EQUIVALENCE METHOD - MASS • HALON 1301 CHARACTERIZED AGAINST FIRE THREATS • USING SALIENT ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS IN A TEST FIXTURE • 2 COMBUSTION SCENARIOS - SPRAY & POOL • 3 FUELS - TURBINE FUEL, LUBRICANT, HYDRAULIC FLUID • MEASURE THE DURATION THE FIRE IS EXTINGUISHED • BENCHMARK BASED ON THE AVERAGE OF 5 TESTS • ITERATE MASS OF THE REPLACEMENT CANDIDATE • AGENT DISTRIBUTION CONSTRAINED - NOT OPTIMIZED • AVERAGE OF 5 TESTS MUST EQUAL OR EXCEED HALON BENCHMARK International Aircraft Systems Fire Protection Working Group Atlantic City , NJ USA 5Nov2003 Federal Aviation Administration WJ Hughes Technical Center, Fire Safety Section, AAR-440 Atlantic City Int'l Airport, NJ 08405 USA SLIDE# 7
EQUIVALENCE METHOD - CONCENTRATION A Representation of Typical Concentration Traces for Halon 1301 and a Mass Equivalent Amount of a Replacement Candidate at the Flame Front Halon 1301 • Notice the characteristics of the typical trace at the flame front in the certification profile : • Exponential growth & decay does not permit a square wave function to meet certification. • A marginal increase in the concentration profile ensured the variability in testing never produced a concentration profile less than certification. • The concentration trace exceeds 6%v/v Halon 1301 for more time than 0.5 second. Replacement Candidate Concentration Equivalence Step #2 Use the duration from the Halon 1301 concentration profile and review the profile of the replacement candidate to find the corresponding concentration (CEQUIV). t H1301 CEQUIV International Aircraft Systems Fire Protection Working Group Atlantic City , NJ USA 5Nov2003 6% certification 6% Concentration Equivalence Step #1 Federal Aviation Administration WJ Hughes Technical Center, Fire Safety Section, AAR-440 Atlantic City Int'l Airport, NJ 08405 USA Establish the duration that the Halon 1301 concentration at the flame front is at/above 6% v/v. t H1301 Volumetric Concentration SLIDE# 8 Time (sec)
