5. Health Services Research • Health Services Research (source CIHR grants and awards guide 2008/2009) • Research with the goal of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of health professionals and the health care system through changes to practice and policy. Multidisciplinary field of scientific investigation that studies how social factors, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies and personal behaviours affect access to health care, the quality and cost of health care, and ultimately, Canadians’ health and well-being.

Key Definitions • Practitioner – an individual directly involved in the development and implementation of health policy at a provincial or regional level and/or the delivery of publicly funded health services offered in BC • Researcher – an individual who holds or has recently held research operating funds as either a principal of co investigator at the time this competition closes. Funding must be from an organization that uses a peer review process and is open to all researchers in BC • Nurse: Refers to the full range of regulated nursing roles within the health services practice community

7. Overall Funding Principles- • To encourage research collaboration among researchers and practitioners (policy or practice) to advance nursing health services research in BC (and across Canada) • Capacity building and knowledge exchange • Programs are developed with advice from the Nursing Research Advisory Council (NRAC) • Co-leads are BC based individuals • Co-leads are a researcher and practice community, plus one should be a nurse or nurse researcher • Organization of one of the co-leads must have a signed MOU with MSFHR for the admin of grant funds • No payment for any research animals

8. BCNRI PARTNERSHIP RESEARCH PROGRAM • Provide partner contributions for successful applicants of national/international peer reviewed competitions that require partner funding as a condition of award • Max $100K per project/program over the term of the award • The research team MUST include a researcher(s) from outside BC • Project must be a priority for more than one BC health authority or one health authority and MOHS • Partnership funds should be spent in BC or demonstrate benefit for BC • Have LOU with CIHR for the PHSI grant and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute • MUST CONTACT MSFHR for other organizations

9. Partnership Program cont’d • All other requests should be made at least four weeks in advance of requiring confirmation of partnership • Email requests will be accepted as meeting the deadline but hard copies should be couriered to MSFHR on the day of the competition deadline and received in 48 hrs to be eligible. 10. Investigative Team Program – Care Delivery • Funding amount • $200K/ yr for max. of four years • $50K of the FIRST year only may be used as seed research operating funds • Must reapply after two years • If no team is qualified for full funding, can get 100K for a team with potential for planning, research, capacity building, KE • Team • Minimum of six members • 3 BC researchers; 3 BC practitioners • Clearly demonstrated and meaningful partnerships • More than one BC Health Authority and BC post-secondary institution

11. Highlights - Investigative • Research should also address a priority for the MOHS • Encouraged to add members from less traditional health research areas (business, education) • Members outside of BC do not count for the minimum of six researchers, prefer this when they bring experience or expertise not available in BC • Salaries and benefits of admin and coordinating staff (caveats in the severance) • Buyout of 25K/yr for one co-lead and any team member who does not have “conduct research” in their job description (needs to be justified, letter of support from the institution and exclusively for replacement)

Application - Investigative • 4:30 PM, APRIL 28th, 2010 – preliminary application • Cover form on the website • 9 page project summary (excludes references and letters) • references max of one page/person • letters of support should be individualized • Detailed list on the web site with suggested page length per section • Section on how the team may leverage additional funding • WILL GO TO AN EXTERNAL MERIT PANEL

13. BCNRI Project Funding/Team Funding • 100K per year for a max of two years • Synthesis and knowledge exchange projects will be for max of one year (usually) • 25 K buyout for a team member who does not have “conduct research” in their job description Team • Minimum of one BC researcher and one BC practitioner • Funding 8 – 10 teams

14. Projects – four types • Research Synthesis Projects: • To inform practice or to identify areas for further research • Should follow standard research synthesis protocols • Research Demonstration Projects: • Projects that assess whether research findings can be applied in a specific setting or assess the implications of introducing certain factors that are significantly different from those assoc. with original research • Evaluation of a NOVEL program may be included under this category but not evaluation of a program without a significant novel aspect

15. Types of projects (cont’d) • Pilot/Seed Research Projects • Scoping projects, preliminary data, demonstrate or explore the feasibility of a larger project • Expect that this is to inform the development of a larger research project or program • Research Knowledge Exchange Projects • Would include interactive activities that promote the exchange and uptake of knowledge between practice/policy and research community • Should have a rigorous evaluation component • Can look from practice to systems level

16. Highlights of Project Grants • While locally relevant and impactful, must have potential for wider applicability • All team members must have a meaningful active role in the planning and implementation of the project • Should include inter-professional/interdisciplinary representation as appropriate • CO LEADS ARE LIMITED TO TWO APPLICATIONS – ONLY ONE WILL BE FUNDED
