Article Based Publishing Current model of publishing: • Articles are published in the issue as a batch, all at once • Articles wait an average of 15 weeks in articles-in-press list while final • Article flow is completely dependent on the issue flow • Article flow is based on print principles
New model introduced: Article Based Publishing • Publishing an article to an ‘issue in progress’ as soon as it is final, not having to wait for the entire issue to appear. • As an article is finalised, it receives a page range and is published in an Issue in Progress. • Final citation data on an article by article basis, decoupled from the issue bound model
Author choice: Open Access option available across Elsevier’s journals Link to open access information. Submission remains the same for all articles, but once an article has been accepted it will be possible to complete and submit an order form to ensure your paper becomes open access.
Find Reviewers Tool “New tool powered by the Scopus database and designed to a facilitate bottleneck in the peer review process” • Powered By Scopus Database • Finds Reviews based on: • Name • Keywords • Filter results by • Institution • Publication history • Journal • Potential conflict of interest

Research Highlights • Short collection of bullet points that convey the article’s core findings • Provide readers with a quick textual overview of the article • Describe the essence of what the article is about • Highlight what is distinctive about the research
Graphical Abstracts • Concise, pictorial and visual summary of the main findings of the article • Captures the content of the paper for readers at a single glance • Summary Figure • Concluding figure from the article • Specially designed for the purpose
Video • Adding value to articles with supplementary video content • Video Abstracts • Authors/editors can briefly discuss and explain their paper or Special Issue in a short video presentation • Streaming and inline video: • Videos placed as streaming (flash) videos on Science Direct • Viewable with just a simple click • Can now occur inside the text of an article
Embed Applications • Science direct sub window linked to external article specific information • Directly fed from an application (and server) other than Science Direct • Development and configuration is completely independent from Science Direct. • Domain-specific information associated to an article
Earth Science Embeds • PANGAEA • External and publicly funded dataset repository • Creates and displays Maps from existing data sets and displays them in Science Direct • Enabled for 135 journals on Science Direct
Googlemaps Embed Pilot • Pilot project in 6 Journals • Tectonophysics • Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research • Gondwana Research • Journal of Structural Geology • ActaTropica • Computers, Environment and Urban Systems • Display Googlemaps versions of maps in articles • Author submitted KML files • Site co-ordinates and Metadata • Available for new and existing submissions
