3. Fun facts Capital of Turkey is NOT Istanbul but Ankara The first church built by man (St. Peter’s Church) is in Antioch (Antakya), Turkey. Noah’s Ark landed on Mount Ararat (AgriDagi) in Eastern Turkey. Total area of Turkey is 780,580 sq km (301,384 sqmi almost twice as big as CA and almost half of Alaska) Ca is 163,707 square miles. Alaska is 656,425 square miles,Population of Turkey is about 62 million (CA’s is 37 million) Median age in Turkey is 28. Median age in France is 40. Median age in US is 37.
4. What is in the name? When Europeans first encountered turkeys on the American continent, they incorrectly identified the birds as a type of guineafowl also known as turkey fowl (or turkey hen and turkey cock), due to that bird's importation to Central Europe through Turkey. That name, shortened to just the name of the country, stuck as the name of the American bird.

6. Fun Facts about Istanbul Istanbul is the only city in the world built on two continents. Istanbul population is about 10 million (1/6th of the entire country’s population) NY city is about 9 million, city of LA is about 5 million. Chicago is about 3 million The city was first known as Byzantium but changed to Constantinople (City of Constantine) when Roman Emperor Constantine made it the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. Turks conquered Constantinople in 1453 but kept the name. The named finally changed to Istanbul in 1930. It comes from STAN POLIS that means “to the city in Greek”. Everybody used to use the name STANPOLIS instead of Contantinople anyway.

23. Canakkale/Dardanelles/Galipoli The city of Canakkale lies at the narrow, 1,200 meter entrance to the Canakkale Strait (the Dardanelles) that connects the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean. Passenger and car ferries run daily between Canakkale on the Asian side and Eceabat and Kilitbahir on the European side. Yachts navigating the straits stop at the well-equipped Canakkale Marina to allow tourists more time in the area. Hotels, restaurants and cafes along the promenade offer a place to enjoy the traffic in the harbor, as well as a view of the Kilitbahir Fortress and the Canakkale Archeological Museum. In 1451, Sultan Mehmet II, later the conqueror of Istanbul, built one fortress on the European side of the Canakkale Strait at Kilitbahir and one on the opposite shore at Cimenlik to control the passage of ships through the strait. Today the Cimenlik fortress serves as a military museum dedicated to the World War I Battle of Canakkale.
24. Galipoli From April 25, 1915, to Jan. 9, 1916, a joint British and French operation was mounted to capture the Ottoman capital of Istanbul and secure a sea route to Russia. The attempt failed, leading to heavy casualties on both sides. Then in 1863 a British expatriate named Frank Calvert discovered ancient ruins at a place in western Turkey called Hisarlikand was convinced they were Troy. Heinrich Schliemann showed up in 1868, provided money for more digging, and took credit for discovering Troy.

Konya and Mevlana MevlanaCeladdiin-iRumi is a 13th century Muslim saint and Anatolian mystic known throughout the world for his exquisite poems and words of wisdom, which have been translated into many languages. Rumi, as he is known in the west, is the best selling poet in USA. The United Nations declared 2007 The Year of Rumi and celebrations were held world wide. Mevlana was a Muslim, but not an orthodox type. His doctrine advocates unlimited tolerance, positive reasoning, goodness, charity and awareness through love. To him all religions were more or less truth. Mevlana looked with the same eye on Muslim, Jew and Christian alike. His peaceful and tolerant teachings have appealed to men of all sects and creeds. In 1958, Pope John XXIII wrote a special message saying: “In the name of the Catholic World, I bow with respect before the memory of Rumi.”
