Where are the major fisheries? • Grand Banks off Newfoundland • Georges Bank off New England • Monterey Canyon off California
What is Sustainable Yield? • Sustainable Yield – A regular amount of a renewable resource that can be harvested without reducing the future supply.
How to maintain a sustainable yield. Fisheries can maintain a sustainable yield by people not overfishing in lakes, oceans, rivers or ponds. For example trees are being cut down to make paper. The best way is to replant the trees that were cut down so we won’t run out of trees in the future.
What is Commercial fishing? • Commercial fishing – is the activity of capturing fish and other seafood for commercial profit.

Pros about aquaculture The fish live and are raised in artificial ponds or bays Salmon, catfish, and shrimp are farmed in the fish farm way (aquaculture) Cons about aquaculture Not the perfect solution The artificial ponds and bays replace their natural habitats Maintaining these farms can cause pollution Spread diseases into wild fish populations CONS PROS
