  3. General duties • Opportunities for most stand alone units • Usually 8 week blocks( can be 4-12 ) • Airway*/ENT/Max/Dental • Gen/Urol/Gynae • DSU/Gen/Vasc • Vascular/Gen • Ortho/Regional/Trauma • Obstetrics • Pain medicine • Ophthalmics • opportunities for other units available (non-theatre, transfer medicine etc) • Simulation based Mx of Cardiac/Resp arrest*

  4. Advanced Modules in RGH • Clinical • ICM ( JPJ) • Obstetrics (MT) • Pain medicine (SW) • General duties (TS) • Non-clinical • Education and Learning (LD) • Management (AB)

  5. Advanced ICMLead Supervisor- Dr.Jack Parry-Jones • 1 year post • Educational contract prior to commencement • Learning objectives as per syllabus • Potential for audit/research participation • Targeted training in Echocardiography,Bronchoscopy and Tracheostomy • Potential for PICU (UHW), Neuro critical care(UHW) and Liver Critical care (King’s)

  6. Adv ICM contd. • WPBAs and appraisals and assessments at mid-term and pre-ARCP. • On call solely to critical care- rotate through Consultant rota, (supernumary with direct supervision) • Ability to run the unit, working with medical/surgical teams • Manage junior staff • Interaction with allied healthcare professionals on the unit • Attend MDT,M&M meetings • Exam training to sit EDIC or DICM

  7. Advanced Obstetric AnaesthesiaLead Supervisor- Dr Matt Turner • Busy unit (>3500 deliveries) in a large DGH • Able to provide all recommended in syllabus • Often combined advanced programme with UHW( 6/12 RGH + 3-6/12 UHW) • Exposure to foetal medicine, cardiology and renal medicine whilst in UHW • Opportunities for attachments to other tertiary units for added exposure (Belfast, Chelsea&Westminster, Bristol)

  8. Targeted Obs training under direct/indirect Consultant supervision • On call on the general senior rota • Involvement in teaching (juniors,ODPs,midwives,medical students,obsteric juniors) • Participation in Consultant led Obs Alert clinics • Placements in neonatal unit,RGH and midwifery led unit at CDMH • Attend Labour ward forum, Risk assessment meetings on MDU • Lead/manage Obs Emergency drills • Audit/Research/presentation opportunities

  9. Advanced General DutiesLead Supervisor – Dr Tei Sheraton • 1 year or 6/12 ( plus 6/12 in specialist adv module eg. Obs, Pain or ICM) • Able to provide all except advanced Airway, Sedation & Conscious sedation in dentistry, Hepato-biliary,Regional. • Limited exposure to trauma/stabilisation and transfer medicine, potential to develop in future (contact Dr Jon Whelan) • Minimum of 2 subunits but most can complete more

Advanced Pain MedicineLead Supervisor – Dr Sonia Wartan • 1 yr post (6/12 RGH, 6/12 UHW) • Newport – exposure to acute surgical/non surgical pain, all chronic pain and cancer pain issues • Pain in special groups (childern, elderly etc) • Chronic pain clinics in RGH, NHH, CDMH and Chepstow treatment centre • Interventional pain therapy lists with Consultant Supervision • MDT experience • Teaching, audit and research opportunities • FFPMRCA at end of 1 year

  11. Advanced Management TrainingLead Supervisor – Dr Andy Bagwell Learning Objectives • NHS structure in Wales and England • Structure of ABHB and department • Roles of CD, Lead Clinicians, CT and Educational supervisors • Roles of RCOA, Deanery, GMC etc • Clinical governance, risk management

  12. Skills • Time and Change management • Business cases/financial planning/Budgets • Interview skills • Committees & meetings • Negotiation skills • Dealing with conflict

  13. Suggested activities • Attend relevant courses • Shadow clinical and management leads • Attend local/national interviews • Identify funding/change issue and formulate plan and possible solutions • E & D training

Advanced Education ModuleLead Supervisor – Dr Elizabeth Duff • If special interest in medical education as a consultant • Aim to provide 2.5 days/week to educational activities under consultant guidance • Core learning outcomes (RCOA Syllabus) • Familiarise with principles of learning in medical education • Ability to teach with various aids to varying groups • Engage in inter-professional learning

  15. Understand and demonstrate developments in medical education and research • Actively participate as Trainer in Simulation based teaching • Lead/act as advocate in departmental teaching • Aid UG/PG teaching within Gwent Clinical School • Ability to prepare/plan day release course, study days etc

  16. WPBA tools • Regular assessments by Lead Consultant • Option/recommended Diploma/Msc in medical education. • Receive and give feedback on educational matters
