The Foundation Stage at Barley Fields • Nursery 78 places. • Our Foundation Stage operates as a distinct key stage within the school. • Staff in Nursery and Reception Teams work very closely together and deliver a similarly themed curriculum.

Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum A curriculum designed specifically for children from birth to 5 years of age which covers seven key areas of learning: • Personal, Social and Emotional Development • Communication and Language • Physical Development • Literacy • Mathematics • Understanding the World • Expressive Arts and Design
Classroom provision and organisation within each phase is very similar, although it differs in structure and formality as children progress through the stage. • Assessment of progress is completed regularly and is based on observation. • Similar methods of attainment and progress tracking are employed in Nursery and Reception.
Transition into nursery A pre-nursery visit can be made by appointment with nursery staff. Children can start nursery from age 3 years. Induction arrangements for entry/length of session will be flexible and can be tailored to the needs of the individual. All children receive fruit and milk/water during their nursery session. Close links with Ryandale Playgroup to offer wraparound care.
Nursery attendance • Option A - morning attendance (26) Doors open at 8.45am and will close at 9.00am. Children can be collected between 11:30am and 11:45am. • Option B – afternoon attendance (26) Doors open at 12.30pm and close at 12.45pm. Children can be collected between 3.15pm and 3:30pm. • Option C – Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning (13) Monday/Tuesday - 9.00am – 3.15pm. Wednesday - 9.00am – 11:30am. • Option D – Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday (13) Wednesday – 12:45pm – 3:15pm. Thursday/Friday – 9.00am-3:15pm.
Children encouraged to enter the classroom independently and put away their things and follow the morning/afternoon routine. • Each child has a coat peg to store their things. • Once the nursery door is closed, late entry to school is through the main school office only. • Children are not allowed to bring toys or sweets into school. • No jewellery or watches to be worn.
All children MUST be collected by a familiar/named adult (over 16 years of age). • Children will be assembled in the quiet room at the end of a session and will be sent out under direct teacher supervision – please be patient as this can take a little while! • Once a child has been sent out from the quiet room parents are responsible for collecting coats and other belongings prior to leaving nursery. • Please do not allow your child, or other children you may have with you, to access any of the stationary learning areas – indoor and outdoor.
Key Person • Children are grouped into smaller groups overseen by one member of Nursery staff, this will be your child’s key person. • You will be informed of your child’s key person when in September. • Your child’s key person will support your child settling into Nursery and keep you updated on your child’s progress and development during Parent’s Evenings.
Nursery Uniform • Grey trousers, pinafore, skirt • Red checked dress (Summer Term) • White polo shirt • Nursery school cardigan/jumper • Black school shoes (preferably with velcro fastening) • Please ensure all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Nursery P.E. No formal P.E. kit needed. Children complete indoor P.E. in a kit provided by school. If your child wears earrings please ensure these are removed on PE days. Please keep encouraging your child to dress independently at home.
Its Learning • In September all Nursery children will be issued with their own password to access our learning platform. • The learning platform allows you to keep up-to-date with Nursery events and current topics.
Extended school activity • As part of our extra curricular programme nursery children have opportunity to engage in a gymnastics club which operates in blocks of 5 sessions on a Wednesday lunchtime. • The focus is on development movement and gymnastics through stories and songs. • This is operated by Carmen Neave – a local gymnastic coach. • Children attend alongside their parents for a 1 hour session. • It cost £15.50 for a 5 week course and is available to all nursery children.
School uniform purchase • We have a small range of uniform and associated equipment in stock for immediate purchase. • Orders for additional uniform can be made at the school office. • Parents may try uniform on for size and return any unworn items if they are unsuitable.
Personal Property • Please ensure all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child’s full name… • even … shoes! … coats, hats, gloves, scarves, caps … lunchboxes, book bags
Please remember… • The end of the nursery session is the best time to talk to the teacher. • Children should not bring valuables, toys, sweets or jewellery to school.
Extended school services • Ryandale Playgroup – daytime wrap around care for 2-4 years. • Barley Fields Children's Club - before and after school provision for 3 – 11 year olds. • * if this provision is required we can put you in touch with them after the meeting
