APEC Emerging Infections Network (EINet): Who We Are • Founded 1996 • APEC-approved project based at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. • Dedicated in providing timely information on emerging infectious diseases (EID’s) in the Asia Pacific. Our goal is to promote collaboration to enhance bio-preparedness in the APEC region.

Rapid Notification: EINet on Heightened Surveillance • Sun 26 Dec 2004 (27 Dec 2004 PST): Tsunami Disaster in South/South-East Asia. • Wed 29 Dec 2004: APEC EINet emails and posts on website ALERT I. Threat of infectious diseases recognized early. • Fri 31 Dec 2004:ALERT II—Provide official URL’s with specific disease information. Include note on low risk of infectious disease transmission from cadavers to relay reliable, evidence-based risk information. • Wed 4 Jan 2005:ALERT III—Report first potential outbreak news in India and Sri Lanka. • Continued follow-up of tsunami through biweekly EINet Newsbriefs. • Similar timely Alerts provided during Hurricane Katrina disaster and recent Avian Influenza activity
Collaboration: Partners in Tsunami Response • Email communication with Ministry of Health and other agencies in Southeast and East Asia. • Videoconference with Hawaii’s Tripler Army Medical Center regarding possible Civil-Military collaborations. • Teleconference with “Uplift International”--NGO with longstanding ties to Indonesian medical community and the UW--regarding potential development of on-site response capabilities.
