What is LLCS? • An alternative to traditional instruction that is still based in research and state standards • A learning community based on meeting student needs through innovative instruction • A place where every student will have the opportunity to grow • A district dependent charter school that is a part of WUSD
What is LLCS? • A school where students learn a respect for themselves, each other, and the community • A school where students understand the value of community service and respect for the environment
Vision • Through innovative instruction, we will provide a learning community rich in content and support to encourage the success of each student. • We are focused on creating a nurturing, child-based learning environment, where educators, parents and learners work together to develop the whole child as a responsible, compassionate member of the community.
Project Based Learning • Project based learning is an instructional approach where students learn new skills and content through practical application by answering a challenge or question posed by the teacher. • Students use their individual strengths to work together to create a presentation or product that provides evidence of learning and answers the challenge or question.
Project Based Learning • Students will be grouped dynamically. They will be grouped according to interest, academic need, and desired learning outcomes. • Video Clip Explaining Project Based Learning
Project Based Learning Examples • Video Clip Showing K student project • Video Clip Showing MS student projects
Eco-Literacy • Students will participate in projects that support sustainable environmental practices and knowledge. • Students will experience activities that reflect an understanding of environmental issues and their impact on a community. • Eco-Literacy includes: • School garden activities • Culinary and nutrition education • Recycling and composting projects
Community Service • We will work with students and families to create an environment rich in community support. • We will have school-wide service learning projects that benefit the larger community. • These projects will be a collaborative effort among students, staff, parents, and other community members in giving back to our community .
Parent Involvement • Parents are an essential part of our learning community. • We would like for parents to be involved in LLCS to the greatest extent possible. • Parent involvement encompasses many things.
Parent Involvement Examples • Help prepare materials (copy, staple, paint, etc.) • Read with a small group of students during lunch • Share your expertise with students for a project • Assist our school in connecting to the community • Assist with school events such as student project showcases or community nights. • Contribute to a school newsletter. • If you are not sure of what you can do to help, just ask!
Facilities • LLCS will be located on the Blosser Lane Elementary Campus. • The goal is to relocate the campus to a more independent location in the future. • Schedules are being constructed to support different starting and ending times, access to playgrounds, and lunch and recess times.
Staffing • Staffing will be dependent on the number of students enrolled. • Grade levels within each classroom are also dependent on enrollment. • Currently we have two teachers who have requested to transfer to the school. The remainder of the teaching staff will be added after the initial enrollment period is complete. • One administrator (shared) and one full time lead teacher (pending funding) will provide leadership and support.
Registration Process • Registration is open until March 31. • If we have less than 150 students apply, all students will be accepted • If we have more than 150 students apply, we will have a random public drawing to select the students who may attend.
Questions • Do you have any questions?
Thank you for coming out this evening. • Enrollment forms are available up front.
