  2. Charter Schools Grant • Allows 25 new petitions to be funded under this grant • Allows ten new petitions to be funded for 07-08 school year • Allows for previously approved and non funded charter schools to receive funding

Petition & Rubric • The rubric to score petitions was reviewed by KSBE in September 2006 • A perfect score on the rubric is 188 points • Minimum score of 144 points to be recommended for Charter School Status • Petition and Rubric will be reviewed and modified prior to use in 2007-08 school year

  4. Petitions • Twenty–one charter school petitions approved by local boards were submitted to KSDE for review • Out of 21 petitions reviewed, 17 scored at or above the minimum of 144 points and 4 scored below 144 points

  5. Timeline • March – Board receives recommendations for establishment of Charter School and funding • April 15 – Required date for Board approval of Charter School status and funding

  6. Funding Formula • Year 1- Planning grants of $60,000 • Traditionally planning has been from the time of approval to July 1, with the school opening during August of the same year • Federal Charter School Grant allows funding for a planning period of up to 18 months • Section 5202 (C)(2) GRANTS TO ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS- Grants awarded by the Secretary to eligible applicants or subgrants awarded by State educational agencies to eligible applicants under this subpart shall be for a period of not more than 3 years, of which the eligible applicant may use — • (A) not more than 18 months for planning and program design; • (B) not more than 2 years for the initial implementation of a charter school • Years 2 & 3 – Two times base student funding or actual expenses; whichever is lowest. Total funding not to exceed $155,000.

  9. Kansas City USD 500 • Submitted an approved petition for the establishment of Maurice R. Holman Academy of Excellence • Petition received an average score of 177.17 • Public charter school will provide: • A self-paced, performance-based learning for grades K-5 • An emphasis on core curriculum, government, and entrepreneurship • Character development; and educational enthusiasm in preparation for participation in a global economic society • Funding • Recommended funding is for a planning grant of $60,000 • USD 500 wishes to take a full year in planning and not receive first year funding during the 2007-08 school year

Parsons USD 503 • Submitted an approved petition for the establishment Parsons Health Career Academy • Petition received a score of 177.17 • Public charter school will provide: • Increased learning opportunities for students in a special area of emphasis, specifically Health Careers • Increase the percentage of student from low income families and students who are under represented minorities in choosing Health Careers • Funding • Recommended funding is for a planning grant of $60,000 and first year funding of $155,000

Hutchison USD 308 • Submitted an approved petition for the establishment of Salthawk • Petition received an average score of 172.13 • Public charter school will provide: • Individual Learning Plans • Project centered learning • Condensed classes focused on curriculum Essentials, (groupings of necessary skills derived from state standards) • Funding • Recommended funding is for a planning grant of $60,000 and first year funding of $155,000

Elkhart USD 218 • Submitted an approved petition for the establishment of Point Rock Family Academy • Petition received an average score of 169.4 • Public charter school will provide: • At risk students experience in establishing and running a business while earning credits to complete high school • A day care for student parents who currently can not consistently attend school because of childcare issues • Increased learning opportunities for pupils in business and economics • Funding • Recommended funding is for a planning grant of $60,000 and first year funding of $155,000

Newton USD 373 • Submitted an approved petition for the establishment of Walton 21st Century Rural Life Learning Center • Petition received an average score of 165.29 • Public charter school will provide: • A connection for elementary school children to the richness of rural life by: • feeding lambs, • hatching chicks, • establishing pond ecosystem • Integration of 21st Century technology in all aspects of standards aligned curriculum • Emphasis on healthy lifestyles • Funding • Recommended funding is for a planning grant of $60,000 and first year funding of $155,000

Pratt USD 382 • Submitted an approved petition for the establishment of Walden Center • Petition received an average score of 161 • Public charter school will provide: • Career training and academic essentials in the areas of: • The Arts • Communication • Business management • Technology • Health and human services • Technology rich curricula • Service learning • Funding • Recommended funding is for a planning grant of $60,000 and first year funding of $155,000

Erie USD 101 • Submitted an approved petition for the establishment of Project Based Learning Charter School • Petition received an average score of 157.88 • Public charter school will provide: • Increased pupil learning opportunities • Authentic learning opportunities • Methodologies and structures that promote student learning, performance and achievement • Funding • Recommended funding is for a planning grant of $60,000 and first year funding of $155,000

  17. Haysville USD 261 • Submitted an approved petition for the establishment of HaysvilleCharter School • Petition received an average score of 156.13 • Public charter school will provide: • Student career interest identification • Story Centered Curriculum • Individually designed academic programs • Integrate curriculum and technology through pod casting, streaming video and video conferencing • Funding • Recommended funding is for a planning grant of $60,000 and first year funding of $155,000

McPherson USD 418 • Submitted an approved petition for the establishment of McPherson CountyCharter School • Petition received an average score of 155.63 • Public charter school will provide: • Career awareness and assessment • Applied vocational technical skills • Employment opportunities in areas of high demand • Students with skills to compete in local and global job markets • Funding • Recommended funding is for a planning grant of $60,000 and first year funding of $155,000
