GLUES AND ADHESIVES There are five basic adhesives used in the school workshop. They are: • PVA • Cascamite • Contact Adhesives • Epoxy Resin • Tensol Cement Health and Safety Many adhesives are now solvent-based and give off harmful fumes. Always make sure that you use them in areas with plenty of ventilation and avoid contact with skin or naked flames.
Exam Questions 1. State the correct adhesive to use when joining two pieces of acrylic together. 1 mark Acceptable answer Tensol cement • Both contact adhesive and Tensol cement give off dangerous fumes and can be harmful to your health. Give two safety precautions that must be taken when using either contact adhesives or Tensol cement. 2 marks Acceptable answers It must be used in a well-ventilated area. Care should be taken to avoid any contact with the skin or splashes to the eyes.
General Hardware Screws • Screws are used to fit materials such as chipboard, MDF and natural woods together although there is a type of screw called a self-tapping screw that can be used for joining thin metal sheet. • Screws can be used to join materials together permanently although as they can be unused with relative ease they are also good as a way of fixing materials temporarily. • Screws are neat, strong and can be removed easily. • Screws are classified by their length, gauge, type of head and material. • When using brass screws it is important to use a steel screw first to make the path clear for the brass screw. This is to avoid 'over-turning' the brass screw which could cause it to shear and break. Nails • Nails grip the wood fibres as they are driven into the wood and are an effective way of fixing or joining pieces of softwood together. • Hardwoods can be difficult to join with nails as they tend to bend under the impact of the hammer. • Nails are difficult to withdraw and a pair of pliers or pincers are suitable for removing bent nails. • Nails are sold according to the length and type. • Below is a range of nails that can be used depending on the type of wood and the nature of the work to be attempted. Nuts and Bolts • Nuts and bolts provide a temporary fixture. • They are generally available in various forms but generally with a head which is hexagonal in shape. A wrench is used to tighten and undo the nut. A washer should always be used in between the nut and bolt to protect the surface and to help distribute the load. • They are generally made from high tensile steel.
General Hardware • Springs are used to control movement, limit impacts, apply forces, reduce vibration, measure forces. • Springs are grouped into two categories: • Compression springs shorten under a load and have their ends ground flat to allow them to sit on a flat surface • Hinges allow doors to move and open. • A large variety of hinges are available from most hardware stores. • The type bought depends on how it is to used and what it is to be fitted to. For example, when selecting a hinge for a jewellery box, a small brass butt hinge is likely to be used rather than a concealed hinge. • Brass hinges are more expensive than steel ones and they give a quality look to the completed product. Below are some of the more popular hinges that are available.

Exam Questions 1. a. Give the correct name for the type of screw shown opposite. b. Name the part of the screw labelled A on the diagram above. 2 mark Acceptable answer a Countersunk head b Shank 2. Explain two reasons why washers should be used when using nuts and bolts 2 marks Acceptable answer Reason 1: They help to spread the load more evenly over the surface of the work. Reason 2: They help to protect the surface of the work which is being bolted together. 3. Explain one reason why brass screws should be used in products that will be left outside. 2 marks Acceptable answer Brass screws should be used on outside products because they will not rust like steel and therefore the product will remain fixed together and it will not fall apart.
KNOCK-DOWN FITTINGS • Knock-down joints allow strong joints to be made quickly and easily. • The parts can be taken apart so that the whole product can be taken apart so that the whole product can be 'knocked-down' and flat packed. • Knock-down fittings are those that can be put together easily, normally using only a screw driver, a drill, a mallet/hammer and other basic tools. • They are temporary joints although many are used to permanently join together items such as cabinets and other pieces of furniture that are purchased in a flat pack.

Exam Questions 1. a. Explain one advantage for the consumer of products that make use of knock-down fittings in their construction. 2 marks b. Explain one different advantage for the manufacturer of products that make use of knock-down fittings in their construction. 2 marks Acceptable answer a. The flat pack product is generally small enough to fit into the back of the car for easy transportation. b. The storage space needed in the warehouse is much smaller since the products are flat and not assembled.
