Howtochoose and adaptmaterialsfor CLIL • CLIL materialsneedto show curriculumsubjectspresented in a non-nativelanguageveryclearly. • CLIL materials are usuallydifferentfrommaterialsfound in ELT coursebooks. • Languagecourseshavematerialswhich are oftenselectedbecause of thesubjectcontent, forexamplemaths, artsorhistory. • Materials can betranslatedfrom L1 curriculumtakenfromnative speaker coursebooks, downloadedfromthe Internet ormadebyteachers.
Whatshouldweaskabout CLIL materials? Are thematerials: • Appropriatefortheage of learners and thestage of learning? • Fitforpurpose? Do they match thelearningoutcomes? • Do theyconsidercontent, communication, cognition, culture? • Supportive? Do theyhavebanks, languageframes and visuals? • Varied in skills, tasks, interaction? • Collaborative, challenging and achievable? • Motivating and complete?

There are manyways of doingthis at differentlevels: • At textlevelwe can includevisuals, diagrams,animation (movingimageson a screen) and visual organisers. We can makesurethe page layout(design of the page) isclear. • At sentencelevelwe can includedefinitions and short explanations. • At wordlevelwecan use labelsorhighlightkeycontentvocabularybyunderliningusing capital lettersorusingboldfond. We can alsoaddglossaries.
