Multiplying a Binomial by a Binomial The FOIL Method
Today’s Objective: • Review homework answers • Multiply a binomial by a binomial using the FOIL method
Homework # 104 odds Answers • 4a2 + 3z 3. 2x2 – 5x 5. -3n3 – 6n2 • 15x3 – 3x2 + 12x 9. 8b3 + 36b2 – 4b • 4m4 + 6m3 – 10m2 13. 3w2 + 7w 15. -2p2 + 3p • 3x3 + 8x 19. -22b2 + 2b + 8 21. a = -7 25. m = -2
What does FOIL stand for? FOIL is an acronym that stands for F – first O- outer I – inner L – last So what does that help me do?
FIRST (x + 3)(x – 4) The terms in red are first terms. Multiply them. (x)(x) x2
OUTER (x + 3)(x–4) The terms in red are the outer terms. Multiply them. (x)(-4) -4x
INNER (x + 3)(x– 4) The terms in red are the inner terms. Multiply them. (3)(x) 3x
LAST (x + 3)(x– 4) The terms in red are the last terms. Multiply them. (3)(-4) -12
Now combine like terms. First = x2 Outer = -4x Inner = 3x Last = -12 x2 – x – 12
(x + 3)(x– 4) F L I O
