May 6, 2014 • Accumulate: to gather, often in gradual degrees; pile up; amass • Example: If you continue to accumulate papers in your locker, you will have to clean it out very soon. • Blight-the rapid and extensive discoloration, wilting, and death of plant tissues; The visible and physical decline of a property, neighborhood or city due to a combination of economic downturns, residents and businesses leaving the area • Example: The blight of the town is due to many businesses closing.

May 8, 2014 • competent-possessing the necessary ability or skills; properly qualified; able to do something well or well enough to meet a standard • Example: You are completely competent enough to pass this test, so please study. • elated-a feeling or state of great joy or pride; exultant gladness; high spirits • Example: When the entire class earned a 90% on the vocab test, Mrs. Wilmarth was elated!

May 9, 2014 • Advocate-a person who argues for or supports a cause or policy; to speak or write in favor of; support or urge by argument; recommend publicly • Example: When Bobby grows up, he wants to advocate for people with disabilities. • furlough- a period of time when an employee is told not to come to work and is not paid; a period of time when a soldier is allowed to leave the place where he or she is stationed • Example: While on furlough, Danny decided to visit his aunt in California.

May 12, 2014 • lilt-the attractive quality of speech or music that rises and falls in a pleasing pattern; A light or resilient manner • Example- Her voice was lilt, which made the children listen to her intently. • martyr-a person who is killed or who suffers greatly for a religion, cause, belief, etc • Example: Joan of Arc was a martyr, and the people of France celebrate her.

May 13, 2014 • Atone-to make amends or reparation, as for an offense or a crime, or for an offender • Example: To atone the theft, the man repaid all of the money he had taken from the little league team. • posterity: generations to come in the future • Example: I am making this scrapbook for posterity.

May 14, 2014 • cumbersome-hard to handle or manage because of size or weight; long and difficult to read, say, etc • Example- The box isn’t that heavy; I am having a hard time carrying it because it is cumbersome • efficiency- the ability to do something or produce something without wasting materials, time, or energy • Example: When starting a group project, efficiency is very important because we want to get the best product without wasting any time.

8. May 15, 2014 • reprieve-to delay the punishment of ; to prevent something from being closed, destroyed, etc, for a period of time. • Example- You are very lucky that Mr. Galella decided to give you a reprieve instead of suspending you for being late all of the time! • viable -having a reasonable chance of succeeding; capable of being done or used; capable of working, functioning, or developing adequately • Example: Because she has so much experience, Marla is a viable candidate for treasurer.

May 16, 2014 • adversity- a condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress; a state or instance of serious or continued difficulty • Example: Sometimes we have to work hard to overcome some adversity, but it will make you a stronger person in the end. • renounce- to say publicly that you no longer own, support, believe in, or have a connection with something/someone;disown; turn away from • Example: After being Jim’s campaign manager for three year, Sheldon renounced him for lying in the comercial.

May 19, 2014 • foresight- an act of looking forward; care or provision for the future • Example: If you have foresight, you would save yourself a lot of disappointment. • wane-to slowly decrease in strength, intensity, power, importance, etc, • Example: As the class got loud and unruly, the teacher’s patience began to wane.

11. May 20, 2014 • Aplomb- confidence and skill shown especially in a difficult situation • Example: After he spoke to the press, his sergeant told him that he had handled the difficult situation with perfect aplomb. • Oppression-unjust or cruel exercise of authority or power; a sense of being weighed down in body or mind • Example: Because of the government’s oppression, the people began to plan a revolution.
