Supporting Women in Community Leadership Welcome Wendy Davies OSDC
Some of the qualities of good/ great leaders • Good listener • Able to celebrate success, compliment, stay positive • Integrity – a value base that is shown, explicit • Empathy – as a communication style, ability to relate • Open and transparent • Self aware – and able to delegate well, awareness of others’ skills • Patience (extreme!) • Well organised • Respectful of privacy, confidentiality where relevant • Able to make time for the role • Willing to invest in their own continuous development
Barriers for Women in Community Leadership Roles • Self confidence • Family responsibilities • Men and women: stereotypical mindsets and cultures. Ideas about where we think power resides (maleness, older people) • Female leaders ‘pulling up the ladder’ • Negative views of assertive women compared to men (‘bossy’) • The need to work much harder to prove your leadership ability • Stereotype of ‘over emotional’ woman (i.e. menopause) • Women being too amenable and adaptable - as a copying strategy in structure that privileges men.
Good examples What else can we do? • Educate girls and boys • Telling more Big Local stories about individual women’s journeys; making visible • Supporting good role models; network • Include men as allies • Mentoring, coaches
