WHEREAS, One in three American children is already overweight or obese; and WHEREAS, Cities, organizations and individuals, including First Lady Michelle Obama are working together to decrease childhood obesity rates in the United States; and WHEREAS, The City of Orlando is committed to providing and promoting activities that support physical activities and healthy lifestyles; and WHEREAS, The City’s Families, Parks and Recreation Department offers athletic programs for 1,500 youth such as: tackle football, basketball, cheerleading and baseball; and WHEREAS,ParramoreKidz Zone provides 225 children the opportunity to play on football, basketball, and double-dutch teams keeping them active and fit; and WHEREAS, Nap Ford Community School, a Health and Wellness Charter School, decreased the prevalence of childhood obesity from 34% to 26%; and WHEREAS, In the Zone Community Partnership Pediatrics program at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children increases awareness and offers a collaborative obesity project for Parramore children and families; and WHEREAS, Hebni Nutrition Consultants, Inc., provides healthy cooking and nutrition classes for children to combat the childhood obesity epidemic; and WHEREAS, Get Active Orlando encourages children to stay active by creating walking, bicycling and community gardening programs; and WHEREAS, Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association (OMYGA), teaches youth the sport of golf, promotes proactive steps to prevent childhood obesity and encourages healthy eating habits as they walk nine holes at golf courses throughout the Central Florida area. NOW, THEREFORE, I, BUDDY DYER, Mayor of the City of Orlando, hereby do proclaim the month of September 2010 as “CHILDHOOD OBESITY AWARENESS MONTH” in the City of Orlando. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereunto have set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Orlando to be affixed this 20th day of September 2010.
