This is Article 44 notwithstanding, a Directive Principle of State Policy enjoining upon the Government the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code for all citizens. When in 1955, Parliament passed the Hindu Code Bill, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was asked by a Member of Parliament why nothing was being done on the question of a Uniform Civil Code.
