AP TIP IN FALL CONFERENCE 2013 MOCK READING Darrin Pollock & Lauren Peterson
Holistic Scoring • score is based on what the essay does well • scoring does NOT mean simply counting “errors” • each essay topic has its own scoring rubric (or guide) generally based on that topic's specific information • scoring guides encompass four essential criteria: • focus • organization • development • correct and sophisticated language conventions
Examining the Prompt 2012 Rhetorical Analysis
Examining the Prompt • Is there a specific question to address or an approach to take when answering the prompt? • What knowledge and skills must a student possess to respond articulately and effectively to the prompt? • What concerns surface when reading the prompt question and text? • What devices & ideas do you recognize as a reader?
2012 Rubric/Scoring Guidlines • Identify key words associated with each score. • Note how the words change with score • Note the * at the bottom of the scoring guide.
Calibrating with a 5 • Completes the essay task, but with no special insights. • The analysis lacks depth and merely states the obvious. • Ideas are predictable and the paragraph development weak. • Ideas presented simplistically and often contain lapses in diction or syntax. • Demonstrate uneven or insufficient understanding of how rhetorical strategies create an author's point. • Writer merely lists what he or she observes in the passage instead of analyzing effect.
