  5. In this lesson we will answer the question: How do you convert units of measurement within the same system of measurement?

  6. Vocabulary measurement- Finding a number that shows the size or amount of something. customary system – system of measurement used in the United States of America. It includes units, such as feet, inches, yards, Fahrenheit, gallons, pounds, etc.

  7. Vocabulary metric system – system of measurement used by most countries, as well as scientists and engineers. It is based on the Base 10 number system. It includes units of measurement such as, meter, centimeter, liter, gram, kilogram, Celsius, etc.

  8. Vocabulary conversion/convert– To change from one unit of measure to another. Examples: 1 yard = 36 inches 1 meter = 100 centimeters

  9. Connecting to Previous Learning In Math 3 and Math 4, you learned about the different systems of measurement. Let’s review some of them now.

  22. To change from larger units to smaller units, multiply. 1.52m= cm Think 1 m = 100 cm Find 1.52 x 100. 1.52 x 100 = 152 1.52 m = 152 cm. Use mental math. Move the decimal point 2 places to the right.

  23. To change from smaller units to larger units, divide. 10 ft = yd ft Think 3 feet = 1 yard 1 foot 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 yd 1 yd 1 yd Find 10 ÷ 3 10 ÷ 3= 3 r. 1 10 feet = 3 yd. 1 ft.

  24. To change from smaller units to larger units, divide. 1,800 g = kg Find 1,800 ÷ 1000. 1,800 ÷ 1000= 1.8 1,800 g = 1.8 kg Think 1,000 g = 1 kg Use mental math. Write 1,800 as 1,800.0 and move the decimal point 3 places to the left.
