France • In France, several kings (mostly named Louis and Philip) strengthened the monarchy by: • Filling government jobs with loyal people • Granting towns charters of freedom • Setting up a national court and a national currency • Forming a tax system • Forming the Estates-General (assembly for the people) 987-1314
England • In England, several kings strengthened the monarchy by: • Conquering the nobles • Introducing feudalism and continental culture • Taking a census and taxing the people • Making the king’s law the law of the land • Reforming the courts 1042-1272
Battle of Hastings • One English king, William the Conqueror, won the throne from a powerful noble named Harold Godwinson. • Their armies fought at the Battle of Hastings. • William won and was crowned king on Christmas Day in 1066 AD 1066
Magna Carta • Over time, kings took more power and began increasing taxes and ignoring the law. • The nobles refused to obey King John unless he agreed to give them certain rights and privileges. • The nobles forced King John to sign the Magna Carta, which lessened the king’s power and increased the power of the nobles. 1215
Parliament • Edward I called for a meeting of representatives to advise him and to help him make laws. • This gathering became known as Parliament. • It later broke into two houses: • House of Lords (nobles and clergy) • House of Commons (knights and townspeople) 1272
