Research Activity (150 Points) • Each of you will randomly select a slip of paper that lists the name of one of the companies in the S&P 500. • You will now research the questions on the following slides about your selected company.
Stock Symbol This is the unique series of letters assigned to a security for trading purposes. You will need to report what the stock symbol is for your company.
DJIA or Not? The company that you selected is listed in the S&P 500. You will need to report if it is also a member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
Stock Price This is the price of one share of stock You will need to report what the stock price is for your company.
Market Capitalization What is the market capitalization for your company? Information about market capitalization can be found in your notes. You will need to report what the market capitalization is for your company.
Earnings Per Share This is the portion of the company’s profit allocated to each outstanding share of stock. This serves as an indicator of a company’s profitability. You will need to report the earnings per share for your company.
Price-Earnings Ratio This is the price of a stock divided by its earnings per share. Example: $20 share price $1 of earnings per share P/E ratio of 20 This tells an investor how expensive (or inexpensive) a stock is based upon its earnings. You will need to report the price-earnings ratio for your company.
Dividend Rate • This is the total expected dividend payment from an investment. • You will need to report the dividend rate for your company.
Dividend Yield • This shows how much a company pays out in dividends relative to its share price. • This is determined by taking the dividend rate and dividing it by the stock price. • You will need to report the dividend yield for your company.
52 Week High • This is the highest price a stock has reached during the last 52 weeks. • You will need to report the 52 week high for your stock.
52 Week Low • This is the lowest price a stock has reached during the last 52 weeks. • You will need to report the 52 week low for your stock.
Additional Questions • What is the primary industry for your company? • What are some of the major products/brands sold and/or services provided? • Where are the corporate headquarters located? • How many employees does your company have? • Also, you should give a brief history of the company (Who founded the company? When was it founded? Where was it founded?) Try and include any other interesting pieces of information that will add to your presentation.
Presentation (150 Points) • Each of you will present the information that you have researched to the class. • Each presentation should last between 3 and 5 minutes. • We will begin the presentations on May 2nd (Monday) • Your name will be drawn randomly to determine the order in which you will make your presentation. • If you are not ready when you are called you will lose 50 points. You have three opportunities to give your presentation. After you have been called three times, you will receive a zero! • You will turn-in your company research questions (Typed) after you have given your presentation.
Helpful Hints • Use the following web sites to help you with your research: moneycentral.com finance.yahoo.com google.com/finance money.cnn.com You can also use the company’s web site to find answers to the research questions and information about the company’s founding and its history. If you use Wikipedia, make sure that you verify the information with another source
Date(s) You Researched Your Company You will need to record the date(s) that you researched the statistical information for your companies.
McDonald’s (MCD) We are going to examine the McDonald’s corporation as a class. We will look at all of the statistics of this corporation and you can use this as a model for you research project and presentation. We will begin our look at MCD tomorrow.
