Task 2: “Identification and Analysis of Success Stories in relation to the Hotels’ Environmental Performance” • Acquire knowledge and experience on sound environmental management systems for hotels • Identify the potential environmental improvement that can be achieved by applying such systems • Document the feasibility of application of such systems in Jordan • Disseminate know-how & experience among the stakeholders involved in the project
Task 2 – Action 1 Analysis of success stories related to the implementation of EMS – Eco label in hotels in various Euro Med regions • Identify and visit successfully implemented systems • Focus on areas with similar characteristics with Jordan • Identify key factors of success, constraints and problems • Develop a manual (D5)
Task 2 – Action 2 Evaluation of the alternative environmental schemes used related to the environmental management/ performance of the hotels • Select best systems (or characteristics of systems) • Evaluate in relation to the characteristics of the hotels in Jordan • Determine typical costs and suitability for application in Jordan • Report (D6)
Task 2: Current Progress • Environmental Management Systems and Schemes identified • ISO-14001, EMAS, Eco-label, Nordic Swan, Green Globe • Focused on ISO-14001, EMAS and Eco-label • 8 hotels visited • 3 x ISO-14001 certified • 2 x EMAS and ISO-14001 certified • 3 x Eco-label awarded • Deliverable 5: 75% completed • Deliverable 6: 50% completed
Visit 1: Olympic Lagoon ResortAgia Napa (1 July 2006) • 4* hotel • Operated in 1991 • Located on the outskirts of Agia Napa, 100 metres from the beach. • Capacity: 518 guests in 259 rooms • Certified to ISO-14001 since 2003
Visit 2: Alion Beach HotelAgia Napa (1 July 2006) • 5* hotel • Operated in 1992 • Located adjacent to the beach • Capacity: 100 rooms • Certified to ISO-14001 since 2003
Visit 3: Sunwing Sandy Bay VillageAgia Napa (2 July 2006) • A-class apartments operated in 1989 • Adjacent to the beach • Capacity: 342 apartments • Eco-label awarded in 2006 • First Eco-label hotel in Cyprus
Visit 4: Sunwing ResortKallithea Rhodes (20 July 2006) • A-class apartments • Operated in 1975 • Adjacent to the beach • Capacity: 309 apartments • Eco-label awarded in 2003 • First Eco-label hotel in Europe

Constraints encountered so far and the way forward • Unavailability of hotel management to participate during summer peak season • Unwillingness of hotel management to participate • Limited number of hotels with EMS in Canary Islands and Madeira • Site visits were completed mid-October, thus deliverables will be completed by end of October (1 month after scheduled deadline) • Further dissemination
