What are Clinical Standards ? • the coding systems used for representing clinical concepts • coded vocabularies themselves are only the visible tip of the standards iceberg • standards are fundamental for progress in health care • essential resources for future clinical decision support, audit, governance, research, education, and training. • In a very real sense, these standards define what can be said about patient care. Standards • Inthewrittenlanguagethereisastandardthatwebeginasentencewithacapitalletterandendwithafullstop • In the written language there is a standard that we begin a sentence with a capital letter and end with a full stop. Simply put data standards are: An agreed upon set of rules that allow information to be shared and processed in uniform and consistent manner.
So what do we have • Clinical Documentation and Generic Record Standards • Endorsed as fit for purpose for the whole medical profession by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC). • Standards for admission, handover, discharge, outpatient and referral records and communications • available for free • ready to use now to develop and implement electronic health and social care records.
