1.3B Multiplying and Dividing integers I can multiply and divide integers to solve problems involving integers.
Multiplying integers • The product of 2 integers with the same sign is positive • Ex: 3(2) = 6 and -3(-2) = 6 • The product of 2 integers with different signs is negative • Ex: -3(2) = -6 and 3(-2) = 6
Dividing integers • The quotient of 2 integers with the same sign is positive • Ex: • The quotient of 2 integers with different signs is negative • Ex:
Practice • Find the product: • 3(7) • +3 and +7 same signs product is positive • -4(5) • 6(-3) • (-9)2
practice • Find the quotient
Try this! • Find the vertical speed of a climber who goes from an elevation of 8,120 feet to an elevation of 6,548 feet in three hours. • How far did he climb? • 6548 – 8120 = -1572 feet (final elevation – initial elevation) • How long did it take? • 3 hours • Negative vertical speed because elevation is decreasing
Something to think about • What if the climber had been a diver? • How would you represent diving 100 m below the surface? • -100 since it is below • Keep this in mind! • Read the context and remember
