Nuts and Bolts • First statewide revision to core since 1999 • Undergraduate Education Advisory Committee (UEAC) • began process in summer 2009 • submitted recommendations report to CB staff in April 2011 • CB Staff and Commissioner made revisions to rules • Rules posted for comment • Board consideration (October 27)
What’s new? • Statement of Purpose • Six Core Objectives replace • 37 Exemplary Educational Objectives, • 6 Basic Intellectual Competencies, & • 8 Perspectives • Foundational Component Areas
Core Objectives • Critical Thinking Skills • Communication Skills • Empirical & Quantitative Skills • Teamwork • Social Responsibility • Personal Responsibility
What happens next? • CB Staff develop procedures for course approval • Faculty develop Core Curriculum at the institution • November 2013 – Core Curriculum submitted to Coordinating Board for approval • Fall 2014 – Implementation of Core Curriculum
Low-Producing Program Review & Results Final review by Board on October 27, 2011.
Exemptions • Permanent (not included in report) • New degree during first 5 years. Review begins in 6th year • Masters’ programs directly aligned with Doctoral programs (same CIP code) • Academic Associate degrees • Temporary (request from Institution) • Meets Closing the Gaps initiatives, workforce needs • Composed of exclusively of courses in other programs
The Numbers in Texas • 3924 programs evaluated by CIP code • 549 programs do not meet 5 year requirements
Closed Programs • Phase-out/Teach-out period • Doctoral & Baccalaureate = 6 years • Master’s & Applied Assoc = 3 years • Cannot be reinstated for 10 years • Exceptions: • Compelling evidence of state or regional need • Need Coordinating Board approval at quarterly meeting (Bacc/Mas/Doc) • Related programs must complete full program request application
