Appearance • Wide, leathery tail • Small ears • Brownish fur • Tiny eyes • Four paws; two webbed and two clawed • Huge, orange front teeth
Diet Vegetarians • Tree bark • Tree buds • Aquatic plants such as cattail and water lilies • Branches • Sometimes corn
Habitat • Lives in forests near rivers or creeks • Creates a pond by building a dam • Builds home called a lodge • Lodge is domed and has underwater tunnels
Defense • Deep water to hide from predators • Sharp teeth and claws • Lodge for protection • Slaps its tail against the water to warn other beavers of danger
Fun facts • A beaver may cut down more than 200 trees a year • Beavers have special flaps of skin that help it not to get water in the beaver’s mouth or nose or ears • Beavers have glands that make a waterproof oil that a beaver rubs on its coat • Sometimes called “engineers” because of their ability to build
