For Today: • Return Re-Write Projects, in-class assignments • Briefly discuss the necessity for using MLA format • Close-reading and discussion of poems: • “The Gift,” by Li-Young Lee • “The Rites of Manhood,” by Alden Nowlan • “Fire on the Hills,” by Robinson Jeffers • “Gentleman without Company,” by Pablo Neruda • “To Women, As Far as I’m Concerned,” by D.H. Lawrence

Coming Soon. . . • Web Authoring Projects • Online revision of your 8-10 page papers • Grade based on: • Quality of the student’s revision • Overall creativity of design • Oral presentation of projects in class, March 11th and 13th • Julia Panko, the Transcriptions Studio RA, will be available to help you with your web authoring projects. Her drop-in hours for the winter quarter are: • Tuesday, 11:00-5:00 • Wednesday, 9:30-12:00 • Thursday, 2:00-5:00 • Friday, 10:00-12:30

  6. So Why Do We Need to Use MLA Format Anyway???

  7. Reasons: • Helps us to understand how research papers are created • Gives us guidelines within which to write • Standardization • Helps to make our writing clear and consistent • Helps us to become better writers • Helps us to recognize whether the texts we are read are reliable

  8. Poems from the masculine perspective. . . • Some things to look for: • Rites of Passage • Stereotypes vs. Reality • Physical and emotional characteristics of what it means to be “masculine” and/or “feminine” • Imagery

For Thursday: • Be sure to read Donna Haraway, “Manifesto for Cyborgs,” and Laura Miller, “Women and Children First,” both found in the same file as Haraway’s article on E-RES • Moodle assignment, extended due date: Thursday, February 28th • Begin web authoring projects • Post one of the following: • a few words or a title • an image • a link • a sound • or any other element of your choosing. • This assignment is to help you get familiar with the process of accessing your websites and with the Transcriptions Studio (SH2509) in general.
