“Failure is not an option when it comes to helping all children graduate from college. Since 1997, the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA has awarded over 150 scholarships... to college-bound high school seniors from San Diego County's most critical community.” Michael Brunker Executive Director, Jackie Robinson Family YMCA The Challenge • Our service area is challenged by high drop-out rates, unemployment and poverty. • 35% of households earn less than $25K per year. • 52 documented gangs in Southeastern San Diego. • Our programs teach character, values, physical skills, and self-esteem, and provide life-saving alternatives to gangs and violence.
The Community The Jackie Robinson YMCA serves the Southeastern San Diego communities of Alta Vista, Logan, Bay Terraces, Chollas View, Emerald Hills, Encanto, Gateway, Golden Hill, Grant Hill, Jamacha-Lomita, Lincoln Park, Logan Heights, Memorial, Mountain View, Mt. Hope, Oak Park, Paradise Hills, Shelltown, Sherman Heights, Skyline, Southcrest, Stockton, Valencia Park, Webster and neighborhood communities in National City north of 18th Street and west of I-805. Currently, the area is experiencing unparalleled growth, a trend that is expected to continue for the next 10 to 15 years.
Our Members The YMCA has been a great help to me and my family by offering programs designed around children of all age groups. It gives mychildren the opportunity to haveexperiences I would not otherwise be able to provide. I am grateful to the YMCA for making it possible for my children to belong. In camp, my children have learned how to interact with others their own age and during difficultsituations. They have also learned how to cope and deal with things that may not go their way using character values. My children have also learned how to swim at the YMCA. Adore’-16, Julian-13, Anthony-8, Brielle-7, and Bre Yon-7 None of this would be possiblewithout the financial aid I receive. This is a great benefit for me as well, being a single mother of 5 children working full time without receiving any child support to help pay for the programs at the YMCA. Since my family was terminated from the Calworks welfare-to-work program due to budget issues, this has been the only program that I can afford and that is only because of the financial assistance program that was offered. There are so many reasons why my family loves the Y but one of the things I like about the programs is the staff. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and works with me to offer the FA that I need in order to allow my children to attend. I also like that the schedules coincide with my work hours to accommodate parents who work longer hours. I think that everyone should know that the Jackie Robinson YMCA is a family-oriented organization that doesn’t discriminate against race, age, religion, disabilities, financial situations, etc. At the Y, you are treated with respect and as if you are part of the family. Thank you for taking my family in as one of your own. - Vickiquita Rucker, Y Member and Parent

The Number 42 “Sixty one years I’ve been in baseball. I’veplayed and worked with some of the all-time legends, like Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, and Dave Winfield. Right near the top of that list was Jackie Robinson, who not only broke records, he shattered the barriers. He not only made a big difference in the game, he forever changed baseball. Jackie led, so that players like Satchel Paige, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron could follow. But Jackie’s contribution shouldn’t be measured on his batting average. It’s much bigger than that. Jackie wanted to make a difference in the lives of at-risk kids - with mentoring programs and scholarships for deserving youth. Join me as we fight that good fight - to give a better future to our kids. When it comes to our kids, we all have to pitch in.” Jerry Coleman “The Other 42” Tribute to Jackie Robinson & Scholarship Gala Founder and Honorary Chair, in Memoriam
