HCHS Parent Action Research Team IntroductionP – A- R - T We want YOU to be a PART of the High School Reform Process at Hazelwood Central High School! April 6, 2009
Be a PART of HCHS Mission Statement • To create a challenging learning environment that will inspire, motivate, and empower our students to achieve life-long success. Vision Statement • Honoring the past, embracing the present, and preparing for the future. LEARNERS TODAY; LEADERS TOMORROW!
Working Together ! • We need your input and your expertise as a parent and a community member to help guide decisions made by teachers and administrators!
Structures for Teams • Three Parent Action Research Teams • Scheduling • Transitions • Professional Development
Scheduling PART • Research Pros and Cons of various successful schedules currently used by other high schools. • How will these schedules impact and/or meet the needs of HCHS students and community?
Transitions PART • Ninth Grade • What programs are most effective for creating successful transitions from middle to high school? • How do we use these programs to meet the learning needs of incoming freshmen (below, at, and above grade level) while maintaining high expectations for all and preparing students for the next level?
Transitions PART • Twelfth Grade • What programs are most effective for creating successful transitions from high school to post high school? • What courses and programs will help HCHS students prepare for the ever changing job market?
Transitions PART • Big Questions? • What does our community need? • What do our local colleges and universities tell us? • What global trends will affect our students’ success in the “real world”? • How do we connect this knowledge to the proposed schedule for 2010 -2011 school year?
PD PART • Professional Development • The Excellence in Education Act requires each school district to have a Professional Development Committee (PDC). PDC must work in collaboration with teachers and administrators for continuous school improvement. • Parents and community members can help teachers understand how to coordinate community needs with instructional practices.
PD PART • Before designing activities and/or programs, it is critical to consider these questions: • Why does this need exist? • What are the results we hope to achieve through focused professional development to meet this need? • What follow-up steps are necessary?
Meeting Dates for PART(Parent Action Research Teams) • We need to conduct research and prepare recommendations that will be presented to the HSD school board next fall. • This allows us to create master schedules and register students at the end of first semester and the beginning of second semester.
HCHS PART • Discussion/ Questions for Clarification • Form Three PARTs • Scheduling • Transitions • Professional Development
