  1. Discovering Educators of Color We will be reaching out and speaking to students on campus here at MCTC about their value to the education system with the goal of increasing the percentage of students of color in the education program to ultimately become teachers.

  2. Demographics • Think about this: Only 1.7 percent of the nation’s 4.8 million public school teachers are black men. • Nationwide, more than 35 percent of public school students are African-American or Latino, but less than 15 percent of teachers are. 

  3. Minnesota Demographics • Total number of teachers: 3157 •  Male:  750 Female:  2407  • American Indian/Alaskan: 35 • Asian/Pacific Islander:  85 • Black/Not Hispanic Origin:  205 • Hispanic: 83 • White/Not Hispanic Origin:  2748

  4. Personal Stories • Most black boys may never be educated by someone who looks like them, and sadly, some African-American boys will never experience a black male role model in their public school classrooms. • It's equally important for the white kids to see the people who don't necessarily look like them, people who look • "Certainly it's important for students to see role models who look like them. However we also know it's the quality of teaching and how they [teachers] orient themselves toward learners, how they deal with the differences that matter most.

  5. MCTC Demographics • 60.5% Students of Color Majoring in Education (2009) • Dropped down to 59.3% in 2010 • Total awards earned in 2010 58

  6. Where do teens see themselves… • Too many black teens see only three career paths, Sports, rap music or the streets

  7. Survey 1. What is your current major? 2. Have you ever considered majoring in education? Why or why not? 3. After watching our presentation, Do you think you would ever consider looking into the education field? Why or why not? 4.Did our presentation leave you having any questions? If so what are they? 5. Was our message clear/understandable? 6. When looking at the demographics, what feelings do you get? and why? What are you going to do about it? 7.
