How much of what we read every day is “Journalism” • For one day, keep track of the information you consume • Every time you Google something, go to a “news” website, read an article, or watch tv, write it down • Is it timely? • Is it reporting events? • Does it involve investigation or research? • Does it involve interviews? • Is it fair and balanced? • Bring it with you on Friday – we will discuss the results
Yearbook • The yearbook is an example of PRINT JOURNALISM • You are now part of a journalism team that is working to complete a student publication • You are the reporters, investigators, writers, fact-checkers, copy-editors, layout designers, and photographers • Each one of you will do ALL of the above!
Time to write! • Today in class you are going to write a personal essay • This assignment will do a couple of things • 1) It will give me an idea of where you are as a writer and if we need to spend time on basic writing skills • 2) It will give me insight into why you chose to take this class over the other electives (be honest, if you’re here because you heard it’s an easy A, you are going to be sorely disappointed) • 3)It will also let me know where the misconceptions lie amongst the entire staff so I know what I need to teach in the first couple weeks
Answer ALL of these questions! • Why are you in this class? • What do you want to learn? • How are you going to contribute to the staff? (special skills, leadership, positive attitude) • What are you wondering, curious, nervous about? • What type of journalism are you most interested in? Broadcast? online? print? • Why? Be specific.
