  1. RNAV--RNP Capt. John Anderson Flight Technical Programs Continental Airlines, Inc.

  2. RNAV • RNAV can be defines as AREA Navigation • It is “Performance Based” • Requires a Flight Management System and an onboard navigation data base • Position can be updated by VOR/DMEs or GPSs • Used to fly point to point, SIDs, STARs, and non-precision approaches

  3. RNAV • VOR and NDB approach over-lays using the same angular obstacle assessment • These procedures must be extracted from the Navigation Database • This technology has been available and used for the last 20+ years

  4. Required Navigation Performance • Precise navigation within alinear containment for obstacle assessment • It is “Containment Based” • Used for “near CAT I” minimums on approaches • Based upon GPS navigation solutions • The future of spaced based navigation • No land based navigation aids required

  5. Linear vs. Angular Assessment

  6. What Does RNP Provide? • Lower minimums for the approaches • Excludes obstacles with linear containment • Provides a more reliable flight schedule • Less over flights—More revenue • No reliance on land based navigation • More precise flight paths for controlling traffic • This technology exist today

  7. Summary • We need local and national FAA support for RNP initiatives • We will work with the local facilities to design these approaches • We need FAA approval of these approaches in a timely manner • RNP is the future, Continental is equipped for the future, and the future is now
