  1. Developments in Europe An Overview of P-RNAV and RNP-RNAV Strategies presented by Chris Bouman EUROCONTROL

  2. Area Navigation - RNAV • On-board calculation of position and track guidance, instead of flying from Beacon to Beacon. • Currently Standard Navigation Capability

  3. Basic RNAV: En Route • Implemented in European En-Route Airspace in April 1998 • Basic RNAV approval required for en-route flight levels (JAA TGL-2) • Main objective: flexibility in route network design • Result: • more direct routes > fuel/time benefits • more flexibility in airspace design/sectorisation > capacity enhancements

  4. Terminal Airspace RNAV • Terminal Airspace required connection to RNAV route network • RNAV also beneficial for TMA operations RNAV introduction in TMA However, B-RNAV = minimum RNAV capability = not adequate for TMA RNAV proc’s States resolved this by setting additional aircraft requirements, but generally without approval requirement

  5. Existing Situation TMA RNAV • Variety in TMA RNAV procedure design and requirements • Variety in aircraft RNAV requirements • Aircraft and operators not necessarily approved for TMA RNAV • This situation has been recognised not to be without safety implications • ECAC States agreed to need for solution

  6. Precision RNAV - P-RNAV • JAA & EUROCONTROL: P-RNAV approval requirements (JAA TGL-10) • P-RNAV aimed at safe and consistent TMA RNAV operations • 2002: EUROCONTROL P-RNAV Integrated Initiative TMA Target: • ECAC TMA: conventional and/or P-RNAV • B-RNAV only above MSA • ANSP P-RNAV Common Methodology • To be in place end 2004, begin 2005

  7. P-RNAV Benefits • ECAC Wide Consistency for TMA RNAV design and operation; • Consistent aircraft and operator Approval Requirements that match TMA RNAV needs (operational and technical); • Improvements in Nav Data Integrity • Safer TMA RNAV operations • essential step towards RNP-RNAV

  8. RNP-RNAV • Aim: European Navigation = full RNAV • Rationalisation of Navigation Infrastructure • Business Case under development: RNP-RNAV mandate 2010 or later. • RNP-RNAV aircraft requirements: RTCA DO-236A/ EUROCAE ED-75A • RNP-RNAV approval requirements: under development by JAA • Requirements closely co-ordinated with FAA
