Let’s take a look at “places and regions” and “human systems” through the eyes of a Vietnamese family in the book The Lotus Seed by Sherry Garland. We’ll explore these two essential elements of geography focusing on country and family traditions as students begin the interview process to get to know each other.

South Carolina Social Studies Content Standards • K-1: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the way families live and work together now and the way they lived and worked together in the past. • 1-1: The student will demonstrate an understanding of how individuals, families, and communities live and work together here and across the world • 1-2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of home, school, and other settings across the world. • 2-2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the local community and the way it compares with other communities in the world. • 2-4: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the division of the world geographically into continents and politically into nation-states.
South Carolina Social Studies Literacy Standards • A. Distinguish between past, present, and future time • F. Ask geographic questions: Where is it located? Why is it there? What is significant about its location? How is its location related to that of other people, places, and environments? • I. Use maps to observe and interpret geographic information and relationships
Time • Several class periods to include all parts of this process
Materials Needed • The Lotus Seed by Sherry Garland • Homework assignment papers • Gallon size closeable plastic bags • Globe or world map • Items that are important to the teacher • Steno pads or a note taking system
Objectives • Students will listen to the story, The Lotus Seed by Sherry Garland • Identify the problem and solution in the text/making connections • become aware of cultural diversity • become aware of peers’ culture or customs through a series of interviews of each classmate.
Procedures • Begin the lesson with a question like; what would you take with you if you had to suddenly leave your home? Use chart paper to make a list of these “important things to me.” • Have a world map or a globe to show Vietnam and the distance traveled to get to the United States
Procedures cont. • Read the book, The Lotus Seed, by Sherry Garland to find out what was important to the Grandmother in the story and how this became important to the grandchildren. • After reading the story, share with the students what is important to you as a teacher. Have four or five items in a plastic bag that explain what is important to you.
Procedures cont. • Students take notes on a steno pad, stopping along the way to explain how to take notes • students write a story using the notes to include important facts • Share several writings to close the lesson
Procedures cont. • For homework, send the letter home to parents about the book • Prior to the lesson, have the students’ names ready to “draw” one name a day so the process will continue with all the students • Send home this note in a gallon size zip-lock for this student to be ready to share his story the next day with 5 items.
Evaluation • Teacher observation • conferencing with students during the writing process • using the state writing rubric to ascertain the development of the students’ writing
Lesson Extensions • Mark each person’s birth place on a map • Discuss the clothing worn in the pictures of the story • Discuss the “point of view” of the storyteller
Materials Provided • Model letter and reminder for the students to take home

Our Practice • We will work in groups of three. • Think of 5 things that you would tell your group about yourself. • Then share where you were born and find that place on the map.
