2. Development of Fashion Industry The Industrial Revolution caused a switch from handmade garments to mass-produced ready-to-wear clothes. Major developments were:
Mechanized textile mills were able to make fabrics of better quality in less time.
The sewing machine was invented, and factory manufacturing of clothing was introduced.
Techniques in mass distribution, advertising, and retail selling were developed and refined.
3. Fashion Trade Publications Trade Publications: Magazines, newpapers, and books that deal specifically with a certain trade or industry.
4. Fashion Trade Publications Women’s Wear Daily: Newspaper that is considered to be the “bible” of the women’s fashion trade. It reports all new apparel trends with photos, fashion illustrations, and stories.
5. Fashion Trade Publications Daily News Record:
Similar to WWD, but covers menswear.
6. Fashion Trade Publications Footwear News: Specializes in the footwear industry.
7. Top American Designers: Bill Blass: Does stylish, wearable, elegant clothes; Coty Hall of Fame.
8. Top American Designers Liz Claiborne: Dead, but firm continues with comfortable, fashion-right clothes, especially for working women.
9. Top American Designers Donna Karan: Designs simple, sensual women’s clothes that stretch and move well; also DKNY label at lower price point; Coty Hall of Fame.
10. Top American Designers Calvin Klein: “All-American” sportswear designs with sophisticated simplicity; status jeans; has many famous clients; Coty Hall of Fame.
11. Top American Designers Ralph Lauren: Has looks from “Prairie dresses” to “English gentry” to romantic; home fashions; retail stores; Polo logo. Celebrated 40 years as a designer in 2008.
12. Top French Designers Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel: Popularized: The “Little Black Dress”, top selling fragrance “Chanel No. 5”. A top fashion house in the world! Karl Lagerfeld has been head designer since the mid 1980’s.
13. Top French Designers Christian Dior: Famous for the “New Look” in 1947. Died in 1957. Firm still lives on as a top French fashion house.
14. Top French Designers Hubert de Givenchy: Especially big in the 1950’s; glamorous evening wear, ladies’ suits, and dresses; perfection of cut and lasting quality.
15. Top French Designers Yves St. Laurent: Known for stylish, elegant, trendsetting designs; has been called the “king of fashion;”
16. Top Italian Designers Giorgio Armani: Milan; did menswear first, creates masculine, unstructured, layered designs for women; witty; relaxed refinement
17. Top Italian Designers Dolce and Gabanna: Design team with sometimes outrageous womenswear and menswear; often in knits.
18. Top Italian Designers Gucci: Florence; known mainly for leather goods; uses “GG” logo.
19. Top Italian Designers Gianni Versace: Milan; known for slinky, chain mail evening dresses; also very original daytime outifts; since his death, designing has been done by his sister, Donatella
20. Fashion Awards Coty Awards: Presented each year from 1943 to 1978, which became the Cutty Sark Awards through 1988.
Coty Hall of Fame: Given to designers who won Coty Awards 3 different times.
Tommys: American award for the best printed fabrics.
CFDA Awards (Council of Fashion Designers of America): Gives awards in many categories for fashion achievements.
