Under the G- Government • Autocratic- one person has power • Unitary- one person has power • Oligarchic- Small group has the power • Democratic- Greatest role of citizen participation-Parliamentary and presidential • Confederation- a voluntary association of individual states with a common goal • Federal- power is divided between one central & several regional authorities.
Under the C- Countries • Middle East aka Southwest Asia aka Persian Gulf: Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq & Kuwait are all members of OPEC (Venezuela is in OPEC but not in Mid East), Primary religion in the area is Islam. Israel- created by the UN in 1948, primary religion is Judaism, the major source of water is the Jordan River Afghanistan- anarchy, extremist group= Taliban Turkey- formerly Ottoman Empire, primary religion is Islam Iran is the only theocracy we have studied this year. `
Under the C- Countries • Asia India is a federal republic like US, primary religion is Hinduism, water source is Ganges River China is a communist nation with a command economy. China has the Huang He, Xi Jang & Chang Jiang Rivers and the Gobi and Taklimakan deserts. Mongolia contains part of the Gobi desert
Under the C- Countries Part 2 • Asia continued Japan, The Philippines, and Indonesia are all island chains (archipelagos) Japan has a constitutional monarchy. It imports most of its raw materials used in production. North Korea is communist/command economy South Korea is a democracy/ mixed economy The US entered the Korean War to prevent N. Korea from taking over S. Korea & making them communist. Vietnam is communist. The US entered the Vietnam War for the same reason, but was unsuccessful. The Mekong River is in Vietnam.

Under the R- Religions • 3 Major religions have their origins in the Middle East: Christianity, Judaism, & Islam (all are monotheistic) • Hinduism & Buddhism originated in India Hinduism= main religion in India, (polytheistic) believe in reincarnation, founded by the Aryans, sacred writings= The Vedas, caste system Buddhism= dominant religion in China, founder=Siddhartha Guatama, sacred writings= Sutra Judaism= Primary religion in Israel, founder= Abraham, sacred writings= Torah Islam= Primary religion in most other Middle Eastern Countries, founded by Muhammed, sacred writings = Qu’ran (Koran) 2 sects: Sunni and Shi’a Christianity- founder= Jesus, sacred writings= Bible Shinto & Confucianism= ways of thinking/ behaving
Under the C- Culture • Middle Eastern Ethnic groups: Persians, Turks, Kurds • African ethnic groups: Bantu, Swahili, San, Ashanti, Arabs, Bedouins, Berbers • Swahili & Bantu are the names of both ethnic groups and languages • Sunni Muslims believe the Caliph should be elected. The Shia believe he should be a descendant of Mohammed. • Japan has almost no minorities. Everyone speaks the same language and shares the same culture. • Religious groups that believe in one God are monotheistic & those that believe in more than one god are polytheistic. • Nagasaki & Hiroshima are the 2 cities that the US bombed in WWII with atomic bombs.
Culture Continued • Apartheid was the practice of racial discrimination and segregation in South Africa • Nationalism was the desire of Africans to gain independence from European colonization • During WWII thousands of Jews were killed in Germany in what is known as the Holocaust. Discrimination against Jewish people is called Anti Semitism.
This and That • The Bantu migration is the biggest in human history • A higher GDP leads to a higher literacy rate and a higher standard of living. • Embargo- NO!!!
