All This, ButNOTSaved!
Cain Offered a Sacrifice… “. . . Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering…” Genesis 4:2-4
Cain Offered a Sacrifice… “. . . but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. So the LORD said to Cain, Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.“ Genesis 4:5-7
Cain Offered a Sacrifice… • Why did God reject Cain’s offering? • Hebrews 11:4 • Hebrews 11:17 • Hebrews 12:24 • Cain disobeyed and would not repent! • Genesis 4:7 • 1 John 3:12 • Jude 1:11 Genesis 4:5-7
Lot’s Wife Escaped… “So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.“ . . . So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.” Genesis 19:17-26
Lot’s Wife Escaped… • They were hesitant about leaving. Genesis 19:16 • Lot and Mrs. Lot had daughters who were still in Sodom.Genesis 19:8,12-15 • Lot’s wife perished because her heart was still in Sodom! Proverbs 14:14 • Mrs. Lot is an example for us.Luke 17:28-33
Lot’s Wife Escaped… “ For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: For yet a little while, And He who is coming will come and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.“ But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul. “ Hebrews 10:36-39
Judas Was a Disciple… “While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.“ John 17:12
Judas Was a Disciple… • One given to Christ by the Father (John 17:12) • Had the Holy Spirit and worked miracles (Matthew 10:1-4) • How could he have fallen? • He was a thief (John 12:6). • He was greedy (Matthew 26:14,15; Acts 1:18). • He did not repent (Matthew 27:3-5; 2 Corinthians 7:10).
The Scribes Prayed… “Then He said to them in His teaching, Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation." Mark 12:38-40
The Scribes Prayed… • They were among the religious leaders of the day(Matthew 23:1-3). • They prayed to be seen of men(Matthew 6:5). • It was a cover for their hypocrisy(Matthew 23:3,14). • It was self-righteous (Luke 18:9,10). • They were without mercy (Mark 12:40). • The scribe was lost because his religion was all show and no substance.
Cornelius Was a Good Man… “There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. . . . . . . send for . . . Peter.. . . He will tell you what you must do." Acts 10:1-6
Cornelius Was a Good Man… • What Did Cornelius Know?? (10:37) • He feared and worshipped God (10:2). • The word that God sent to the children of Israel (10:36,37,42). • That peace through Jesus Christ was preached (10:36,37,43).[Phillip, Acts 8:40] • That Jesus was Lord of ALL (10:36,37,43). • The works of Jesus (10:38,39,40).
Cornelius Was a Good Man… • What Didn’t Cornelius Know?? • God had “granted repentance to life” to the Gentilesas well as the Jews (Acts 11:18). • The words God commanded Peter to speak to them, i.e., that which they MUST do (10:33, 6,22,32,42; 11:14). • That they, too, must be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ (10:47,48; 11:17; cf. 2:38).
The Jews Had Zeal… “Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.” Romans 10:1-3
The Jews Had Zeal… • Why were they lost? • They were ignorant. • They were self-righteous. • They were rebellious. • They were faithless(vs. 6) • Israel was lost because they sought salvation on their own terms rather than God’s(by Moses’ Law and NOT by grace through obedient faith in Christ).
Felix Trembled… “And after some days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, ‘Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you.’” . . . Acts 24:24-26
Felix Trembled… • Felix heard Paul preach about “the faith in Christ,” which included righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come (vs. 24,25). • Felix was afraid. Why?? He knew he stood condemned (vs. 25). • He delayed. Why? Christianity requires righteous conduct, and he was not yet ready to live righteously (vs. 25). • Not saved by good intentions(vs. 26,27).
Agrippa Was Almost… “ King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you do believe." Then Agrippa said to Paul, ‘You almost persuade me to become a Christian.’ And Paul said, ‘I would to God that not only you, but also all who hear me today, might become both almost and altogether such as I am, except for these chains.’" Acts 26:27-29
Agrippa Was Almost… • Agrippa was lost because of: • Politics (vs. 21) • Peer pressure (vs. 24) • Unbelief (vs. 23; cf. 8, 27) • Sin (vs. 20; cf. 25:13) • Agrippa was lost because he was unwilling to be persuaded by the Gospel alone (Acts 26:29).
