Background • Clarification: desires and cravings • Desires are natural, necessary, and part of life • Cravings cause unnecessary suffering • We must redirect desires to higher motives *Higher motive: mature desires that includes truth, justice, kindness, altruism, beauty, and the sacred. • The higher motive is sought to be cultivated in many religions

  3. Desire in Society • Desires to: • Get a job • Fit in • Be wealthy • Be educated • Have a nice home

  4. Exercise 1: Think of a Long time Benefits • Simplifies choices • Helps one find the right and wrong more clearly • Business can be disregarded • Instead, you can focus on family, friends, career, life style, ect. • Quality over quantity • Find love, wisdom, generosity, and joy • Life become less scattered

Exercise 1 (continued) Challenges • Must accept sacrificing little things to find the big picture • May have to give up addiction to Facebook, Twitter, parties, other desires that don’t TRULY matter… • Trade in petty desires for higher motives • Is life altering • Must see life in light of eternity, rather than just tomorrow

  6. Exercise 2: Dedicate an Activity to Higher Goal Benefits • Reduces selfish inclinations • Transforms motivation • Can find happiness if we mean what we do in a positive manner • Is extremely freeing

  7. Exercise 2 (continued) Challenges • Is harder than changing what we are doing, we have to change how we think • Make personal goals clearer • Again, find the bigger picture in life

  8. Exercise 3: Discover Future Self Benefits • Helps you find peace • Know what you want to do • Feel more secure • Discover exactly what your heart feels • Increase hope for the future • Imagine what you want in life

  9. Exercise 3 (continued) Challenges • Knowing what you want to do • Some people have clearer dreams than others • What you imagine that you want, may not be what you need • Back to those negative desires…
