  1. Southmoor CommunitySchool. Learning Principles

  2. Why do we need principles? • Consistency with pupils. • A focus for development and a shared vocabulary. • But we already have a policy….. • We need an agreement.

  3. The Principles are not….. • A straight-jacket. • A tick-list • It is not mechanical because good teaching does not guarantee good learning.

  4. The Principles are…. • An attempt to define something very sophisticated. • About aspiration and ethos. • A practical set of learning tools

  5. 1. Pupils should know “The Point” • What am I to do? • Why am I doing it? • Do I know how to do it better? • How will I know when I have succeeded? • How does this link to what has happened before and what will happen next?

  6. 2/3 Use Praise/Give get respect. • Praise and respect are two of the most powerful weapons in the teacher’s arsenal! • They are tools used to create the right environment for learning. • We praise to get the behaviour we praise. • Respect is a powerful disciplinary tool.

  7. 4. Offer choice of learning activity. • The caveats…where possible….where appropriate….within reason…not carte blanche…i.e. it’s about professional judgement. • Choice empowers, motivates and differentiates. • Ask pupils to review their choice to become better learners.

  8. 5. Try new things • So what lesson can you remember being taught? • What lesson can you remember teaching last year? • We must take risks.

  9. 6/7 Collaborative and Active • Pupils would rather listen to each other than the teacher – how do we exploit this? • Pupils as teachers and assessors doubles the value. • VAK and the context of learning.

  10. 8/9 Think and Listen • Closed questions and three second response. • Deeper thinking with no right answer to build up the skills to answer future questions. • Being an Extra is de-motivating. • Meta-cognition and pole-bridging (Uh?)

  11. 10. Stimulating surroundings… • Yes…I know…. • What should the appearance of a classroom say about… • teacher…subject….lessons…pupils… • Now go play detective in your own room.

  12. Toolkit Directory of Good Practice SoW Audit CPD/New School Day Pupil-evaluation Coaching SEAL Teaching and Learning Lab. Action Research. Learning to Learn Whole-school practice – Lesson Observation and Perf Management So where do we go from here…
